What it does

The heptathlon crowns the most complete athlete across seven events in two days. Sprints, jumps, and throws each convert to points through power tables, so a tenth here and a centimeter there both move the total. Addition decides the medals.

The tool above applies the World Athletics women's outdoor tables: 100 m hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200 m on day 1; long jump, javelin, and 800 m on day 2. Enter marks in the shown units and read each day plus the total.

World Athletics publishes the combined-events scoring tables and member federations like USATF apply them at championships. Track formulas subtract time from a base; field formulas subtract a base from the mark. Every event rounds down before the sum, which the engine mirrors.

Use totals to grade a series, not single events. A 6,000 total marks world class women; 5,300 like the example is strong collegiate ground. Compare only within current tables, since implement and table changes break cross-era math.

How to use

  1. Enter 100 m hurdles in seconds.
  2. Enter high jump in cm and shot put in m.
  3. Enter 200 m in seconds.
  4. Enter long jump in cm, javelin in m, 800 m in seconds.
  5. Read day 1, day 2, and the total.
  6. Compare totals only within the same tables.

Formula

Track: A(B-T)^C. Field: A(M-B)^C, floored per event.
T
Time in seconds for 100H, 200 m, 800 m.
M
Mark in cm (jumps) or m (throws).
A, B, C
Per-event constants A, B, C from the tables.

T is seconds, M is cm for jumps and m for throws. Constants come from the World Athletics combined-events tables for the women's outdoor heptathlon. Marks at or below B give zero for that event.

Worked example

Example: 5,338 point series

100H 14.5, HJ 165, SP 11.5, 200 m 25.5, LJ 550, JT 35, 800 m 135.

  1. 100H 14.5 s: 9.23076 x 12.2^1.835 = 909.
  2. HJ 165 cm: 1.84523 x 90^1.348 = 795.
  3. SP 11.5 m: 56.0211 x 10^1.05 = 628.
  4. 200 m 25.5 s: 4.99087 x 17^1.81 = 841. Day 1 totals 3,173.
  5. LJ 550 cm: 0.188807 x 340^1.41 = 700. JT 35 m: 15.9803 x 31.2^1.04 = 572. 800 m 135 s: 0.11193 x 119^1.88 = 893. Day 2 totals 2,165; series totals 5,338.

Limits

  • Women's outdoor tables only. Men's events and indoor pentathlon differ.
  • Hand times and windy marks score the same here; records differ.
  • Floored per event, so near ties can hide gaps.
  • No age grading or wind correction.

Common mistakes

  • Entering jumps in meters instead of cm.
  • Mixing decathlon constants into heptathlon math.
  • Comparing totals across table eras.
  • Rounding up instead of flooring per event.
  • Scoring fouls or DNFs as something.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

Day 1 for 13.8, 172, 13.2, 24.6?

100H 1007, HJ 879, SP 741, 200 m 924. Day 1 totals 3,551 pts.

Full total for 13.8 / 172 / 13.2 / 24.6 / 590 / 42 / 128?

LJ 819, JT 706, 800 m 994. Day 2 is 2,519; full total is 6,070 pts.

Questions

How do combined-events points work?

Track events use A x (B minus time)^C; field events use A x (mark minus B)^C, with hurdles and sprints in seconds, jumps in cm, throws in m. Each event floors to whole points before adding.

Do men and women use the same tables?

Yes. Men contest the decathlon outdoors and the heptathlon indoors; women contest the heptathlon outdoors and the pentathlon indoors. Each has its own tables, so never mix them.

What scores zero points?

Zero for that event. Marks at or below the B threshold score nothing (for example a very slow sprint). The tool floors negatives to zero per event.

Does wind change the points?

Wind helps sprints, hurdles, and jumps but scoring ignores it; records need legal wind. A windy 12.5 still banks full table points.

When did the tables last change?

2002 when the javelin tables shifted for the new implement. Old marks convert poorly across eras, so compare within the current tables only.

What is the event order?

Day 1 order (100H, HJ, SP, 200 m) then day 2 (LJ, JT, 800 m), usually across two days. The 800 m closes the meet, which is why overall leads swing late.
