What it does

Even splits divide finish time by distance. A 50 minute 10 km needs 5:00 per km, with 5 km in 25:00. Holding that pace to the line finishes on target before any kick.

The tool above takes total distance, total minutes, and split distance and returns split time, even pace, and formatted total. The defaults 10 km in 50 min with 5 km split match the worked example, so the page opens showing 25:00. Switch to imperial for miles.

Pace is total minutes over total distance. Split multiplies pace by split distance. A 6.2 mile 50 minute run paces 8:04 per mile, with 3.1 miles in 25:00. Hills, wind, and crowds shift real splits, so many runners plan slight negative splits instead.

Use metric for 5K, 10K, and marathon kilometers. Use miles for US road races in miles. Decimal minutes keep math clean: 50.5 means 50:30, not 50:05.

This page shows the formula, one full hand checked example at 10 km in 50 min, a reference table, and practice checks that run through the tool in both unit systems.

How to use

  1. Pick Metric (km) or Imperial (mi).
  2. Type total distance in the active unit.
  3. Type total goal minutes as a decimal.
  4. Type split distance at most total.
  5. Read Split time as mm:ss or h:mm:ss.
  6. Read Even pace per km or per mile.

Formula

Pace = total minutes / total distance. Split = pace x split distance.
pace
Minutes per km or per mile.
split
Checkpoint distance in same unit.
total
Full race distance and time.

Even pace assumed. For negative splits, run early splits a few seconds slow per km, then close faster. Decimal minutes convert with 0.5 = 30 seconds.

Worked example

Example: 10 km in 50 min, 5 km split

Goal 50 min for 10 km. Find 5 km split and pace.

  1. Pace: 50 / 10 = 5 min per km.
  2. Format pace: 5:00 /km.
  3. Split: 5 x 5 = 25 min.
  4. Format split: 25:00.
  5. Total check: 50:00.
  6. Imperial mirror: 6.2 mi in 50 min gives 8:04 per mile, 3.1 mi in 25:00.

Limits

  • Even pace only. Hills and wind break evenness.
  • No fatigue model. Late race fade needs coaching margins.
  • Decimal minutes only. Seconds enter as fractions.
  • Course short or long shifts real splits.

Common mistakes

  • Reading 50.5 min as 50:05 instead of 50:30.
  • Mixing km with miles in one ratio.
  • Planning even through hilly miles.
  • Rounding pace early, then missing by minutes.
  • Sprinting early and paying after halfway.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

42.2 km in 120 min, half?

Pace 2:51 per km, half 1:00:00, total 2:00:00.

5 km in 25 min, 1 km split?

Pace 5:00 per km, split 5:00, total 25:00.

Questions

10 km in 50 min pace?

5:00 per km.

Half split?

Half total on even pace: 25:00 here.

Miles?

Same ratio per mile. Here 8:04 per mile.

Negative split?

Start a touch slow, close fast. This tool gives the even baseline.

Decimal minutes?

Multiply fraction by 60 for seconds. 0.5 is 30 s.

Why total check?

Formats your decimal entry to catch 50.5 versus 50:05 errors.
