What it does

The Chinese zodiac assigns every year an animal and an element on interlocking cycles. Twelve animals rotate year by year while five elements rotate every two years, combining into a sixty year calendar that millions consult for New Year celebrations and birth year lore.

The tool above takes a Gregorian birth year and returns the animal, the element with yin yang polarity, and neighboring same sign years. The 2026 default reads Fire Horse (Yang) with 2014 and 2038 beside it; 2000 gives Metal Dragon and 2024 Wood Dragon.

Both confirm 2026 as the Horse year in the current rotation.

The minus 4 anchors the math because 1984 opened a Wood Rat cycle year. Modulo keeps every century aligned: 2026 minus 4 is 2022, whose remainder 6 selects Horse and remainder 2 selects Fire Yang. Lunar boundaries shift the first weeks of January and February into the prior sign, which arithmetic alone cannot fix.
