What it does

Two zodiac traditions read the same birthday differently. The Western tropical zodiac slices the year into twelve date bands named for constellations along the sun path. The Chinese year assigns one of twelve animals with a paired element on a twelve year wheel.

The tool above takes any birth date. It returns the Western sign, the Chinese animal, and the element, with the tables below for checking.

Tropical dates anchor to seasons, not current star positions. Precession drifted constellations nearly a month since Babylonian times, which is why sidereal astrologers and astronomers read different signs for the same day.

Chinese New Year starts between late January and mid February, so January babies belong to the previous animal year. This page uses calendar years for simplicity and notes the edge.

How to use

  1. Enter the full birth date.
  2. Read the Western sign from the month day band.
  3. Read the Chinese animal from the year wheel.
  4. January and early February birthdays check the lunar new year.

Formula

Western: month day band lookup. Chinese: (year - 4) mod 12 maps 0 Rat through 11 Pig. Element: year mod 10 pairs.
mod 12
Twelve year animal wheel position.
mod 10
Five element pairs cycling by stem.

Season anchored Western bands used here.

Lunar new year starts the Chinese year properly. Babies born before it in January or February take the prior animal.

Worked example

Example: born 15 Jun 1990

Birth date 15 June 1990, a Friday.

  1. Western: June 15 sits in May 21 to June 20, so Gemini.
  2. Chinese: (1990 - 4) mod 12 = 1986 mod 12 = 6, which maps to Horse.
  3. Element: 1990 mod 10 = 0, which maps to Metal.
  4. Answer: Gemini, Metal Horse.

Limits

  • Tropical Western dates. Sidereal differs.
  • Calendar year Chinese dating. Lunar edges vary.
  • Cusp days read either neighbor by system.
  • Entertainment, not guidance for decisions.

Common mistakes

  • Reading January babies into the new animal year.
  • Mixing tropical and sidereal sign lists.
  • Assuming constellations match signs today.
  • Confusing Goat with Sheep or Ram translations.
  • Planning life choices on either wheel.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

Born 25 Dec 2000. Signs?

Capricorn. Then (2000-4) mod 12 = 4, Dragon.

Born 4 Jul 1985?

Cancer. Then (1985-4) mod 12 = 1, Ox.

Questions

What is my zodiac sign?

Match month and day to the bands: June 15 is Gemini.

Why do signs and constellations differ?

Precession moved stars since the bands were fixed to seasons two millennia ago.

What animal is 2026?

Horse. The wheel runs Rat 2020 through Snake 2025 to Horse 2026.

What about January birthdays?

They may belong to the prior Chinese year before lunar new year.

Do elements matter?

In Chinese tradition each animal year pairs an element, cycling every sixty years combined.

Is any of this scientific?

No. Astronomy tracks stars; astrology interprets them without evidence.
