Generation Calculator
Your generation from birth year, with span and name origin.
What it does
Generations bundle birth years that came of age through shared events, from postwar booms to the internet age. Researchers use them to compare attitudes across time, not to sort personalities.
The tool above maps any birth year to its generation with the span and name origin. Cutoffs follow Pew Research, the most cited standard.
Cusps blur every boundary by design. Someone born in 1980 or 1997 straddles two cohorts, and demographers edge the lines a year or two between studies.
Names carry history, not judgment. Boomers name a birth boom, Millennials a turn of millennium coming of age, and Alpha a fresh alphabet start.
How to use
- Enter the four digit birth year.
- Read the generation and its span.
- Near a boundary, read both neighbors.
- Use cohorts for context, not stereotypes.
Formula
- Pew cutoffs
- Standard bands used here throughout.
- cusps
- Boundary years belonging to both sides socially.
No law fixes generations. Media and researchers converge loosely, with Pew as the anchor.

Questions
What generation am I?
Match the year: 1990 is Millennial, 1975 Gen X, 2005 Gen Z.
When do Millennials start and end?
1981 to 1996 by Pew, the most cited lines.
What comes after Gen Z?
Generation Alpha from 2013, named as a fresh alphabet start.
Are cusps real?
Socially yes. Boundary babies share traits with both cohorts.
Why do cutoffs exist?
Shared coming of age events shape cohorts: wars, booms, recessions, internet.
Do generations predict behavior?
Weakly at best. Age, class, and place usually matter more.
