Chicken Roast Time Calculator
USDA roast times for whole chicken at 350 F, safe temperature checks, and fridge thaw days.
What it does
Whole chicken timing follows weight bands, not a single minutes per pound line, because heat moves slower through a deep bird than a shallow one. Federal roasting charts publish low to high ranges at 350 F so ovens that run cool still finish safely inside the window.
The tool above takes the bird weight in pounds or kilos with a stuffed or unstuffed switch. It returns the roast range, the 165 F safe temperature for meat and stuffing, and the fridge thaw days at 24 hours per 4 to 5 lb.
The default 6 lb unstuffed bird roasts 2 h 0 min to 2 h 15 min, rests 10 to 20 minutes, and needs 2 fridge days to thaw. The metric mirror of 2.72 kg lands on the same roast range with the same 2 thaw days.
Times and temperatures follow the FoodSafety.gov meat and poultry roasting charts with USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service safe cooking guidance beside them. Both name 165 F (74 C) as the safe line for every part of the bird, and both set the oven floor at 325 F with chicken bands quoted at 350 F.
How to use
- Pick pounds or kilos to match your scale.
- Enter the thawed bird weight, 2 to 8 lb.
- Set stuffed only when the cavity holds stuffing.
- Plan the meal around the high end of the range.
- Start thaw math early: 24 hours per 4 to 5 lb in the fridge.
- Verify every part with a thermometer; time never proves safety.
Formula
- bands
- USDA time ranges that widen with bird size at 350 F.
- 165 F
- Safe internal temp for meat, wings, and stuffing center.
- 4 to 5 lb
- Fridge thaw allowance per 24 hours at 40 F or below.
Kilos convert to pounds first (x 2.20462), then run the same bands, so both systems agree. Stuffed birds add 15 to 30 minutes, and the stuffing center must reach 165 F just like the meat.
Worked example
Example: 6 lb unstuffed
Imperial defaults: 6 lb, unstuffed, 350 F oven.
- Band: 6 lb sits in the 5 to 7 lb band.
- Range: 2 to 2.25 hours.
- Convert: 0.25 x 60 = 15 min, so 2 h 0 min to 2 h 15 min.
- Thaw: 6 / 4 = 1.5, round up to 2 fridge days.
- Check: thigh, wing, and breast must all read 165 F (74 C).
- Tool shows the range plus 2 days thaw.
Reference table
| Weight | Roast range | Thaw |
|---|---|---|
| 3 to 4 lb (1.4 to 1.8 kg) | 1 h 15 min to 1 h 30 min | 1 day |
| 5 to 7 lb (2.3 to 3.2 kg) | 2 h 0 min to 2 h 15 min | 2 days |
| 6 lb stuffed (2.7 kg) | 2 h 15 min to 2 h 45 min | 2 days |
| 8 lb cap (3.6 kg) | Top of the 5 to 7 lb band | 2 days |
Limits
- Whole chicken bands cover 2 to 8 lb; parts and breasts differ.
- Oven thermostats drift; thermometers rule over clocks.
- Convection and dark pans brown faster without cooking faster inside.
- Brines and rubs do not lower the 165 F line.
Common mistakes
- Roasting at 325 F while using the 350 F bands, then serving early.
- Skipping the stuffing center temperature check.
- Thawing on the counter, which grows bacteria outside.
- Carving without resting so juices run out.
- Planning on the low end and serving late.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
3.5 lb unstuffed?
1 h 15 min to 1 h 30 min, thaw 1 day.

Safe temp for the thigh?
165 F (74 C) in thigh, wing, breast, and stuffing center.
Questions
How long per pound for whole chicken?
No single rate; use bands. A 6 lb bird roasts 2 h 0 min to 2 h 15 min at 350 F unstuffed.
What temperature is safe?
165 F (74 C) in breast, thigh, wing, and stuffing center.
How do I thaw safely?
Fridge only at 40 F or below, 24 hours per 4 to 5 lb. A 6 lb bird needs 2 days.
Stuffed or not?
Unstuffed cooks faster and more evenly. Stuffed birds need 15 to 30 minutes more plus center checks.
Can I use 325 F?
Yes, 325 F is the federal oven floor, but allow extra time since the published chicken bands sit at 350 F.
How long to rest?
10 to 20 minutes tented, which also lets temperatures even out before carving.
