Zakat Calculator
Zakat at 2.5 percent on net wealth once it passes the nisab, gold or silver basis.
What it does
Zakat is an annual act of worship on wealth: once what you own passes the nisab threshold and has stayed there for a lunar year, 2.5 percent of it goes to those the Quran names as eligible.
The tool above takes your cash, gold and silver, investments, receivables, and short term debts, picks the gold or silver nisab standard, and returns your net zakatable wealth, the threshold, and the amount due.
The defaults describe a straightforward case: 30,000 dollars net after debts, a nisab of 8,500 dollars on gold at 100 dollars per gram, so 750 dollars due. Switch to the silver standard at 1.20 dollars per gram and the threshold drops to 734.83 dollars, which mostly matters when markets make silver cheap.
The rules follow zakat.org's nisab explainer, the Indonesian tax authority's zakat guidance, and Islamic Relief's calculator: 2.5 percent, 85 g of gold, and 612.36 g of silver on the silver view, with 87.48 g listed as an alternate gold weight by some organizations.
How to use
- Pick the gold or silver nisab standard.
- Enter the current price per gram for your chosen metal.
- Total your cash, bank balances, and savings.
- Add investment gold and silver at current market value.
- Add investments, receivables, and short term debts due now.
- Read the net wealth, check it against nisab, and give the due amount.
Formula
- Nisab
- The minimum wealth that makes zakat due, set by the current metal price.
- 2.5 percent
- One fortieth, the standard rate on monetary wealth.
- Hawl
- One lunar year of ownership above nisab; the lunar year runs about 354 days.
Nisab is not a tax on the threshold; it is a gate. Below it nothing is due, above it the full 2.5 percent runs on the net. Debts reduce the base only to the extent they are due now, and charities differ on how strict that reduction should be.
Worked example
Example: 30,000 dollars net above an 8,500 dollar nisab
Defaults: gold standard at 100 dollars per gram, cash 25,000, metals 3,000, investments 5,000, receivables 1,000, debts 4,000.
- Nisab: 100 x 85 = 8,500 dollars.
- Net wealth: 25,000 + 3,000 + 5,000 + 1,000 - 4,000 = 30,000 dollars.
- 30,000 is above 8,500, so zakat is due.
- Zakat: 30,000 x 0.025 = 750 dollars.

Questions
What is nisab?
The minimum wealth threshold in gold or silver weights that makes zakat obligatory.
Why 85 grams?
It is the classical equivalent of 20 dinars of gold; some organizations list 87.48 g after rounding.
Which standard should I use?
Scholars differ; zakat.org presents the 85 g gold weight as the common figure, while some charities also publish a silver threshold of 612.36 g. The silver one is lower and makes more people eligible.
Do I pay on my house and car?
Most scholars exclude the primary residence, personal car, and tools of trade; investment property is treated differently.
When is zakat due?
Once a lunar year has passed on wealth above nisab; many people fix it to Ramadan for convenience.
Is the rate always 2.5 percent?
For monetary wealth and trade goods yes; livestock and crops use their own schedules.
