What it does

Scholarship odds divide awards by applicants. Ten awards among five hundred entries is two percent. Expected value multiplies by dollars to price effort before essays.

The tool above takes awards, applicants, and amount and returns odds, expected value, and ratio. The defaults 10, 500, and 2000 match the worked example, so the page opens showing 2.00 percent.

Odds are awards over applicants times 100. Expected is odds fraction times amount: 0.02 times 2000 is $40. Ratio inverts to applicants over awards: 50 to 1. Effort and fit shift real chances from raw odds.

Use this to rank lists by expected value per hour, not sticker alone. Small local awards often beat famous long shots. Deadlines and eligibility filter first.

This page shows the formulas, one full hand checked example at 10 of 500, a reference table, and practice checks that run through the tool.

How to use

  1. Type awards offered.
  2. Type applicants expected.
  3. Type award dollars.
  4. Read Odds in percent.
  5. Read Expected value per entry.
  6. Rank by expected per hour of work.

Formula

Odds = 100 x awards/applicants. EV = odds/100 x amount. Ratio = applicants/awards.

Worked example

Example: 10 awards, 500 applicants, $2000

Ten $2000 awards draw five hundred entries. Find odds.

  1. Odds: 10 / 500 = 0.02 = 2.00 %.
  2. Expected: 0.02 x 2000 = $40.00.
  3. Ratio: 500 / 10 = 50:1.
  4. Check: 2 percent of 500 is 10 awards.
  5. Per hour: divide $40 by essay hours.
  6. Apply where fit lifts over raw odds.
