Education Credit Calculator
AOTC education credit, refundable share, and monthly value.
What it does
College bills carry a tax break many miss. The American Opportunity credit pays back part of tuition, fees, and books each year.
The tool above runs the AOTC formula. Four thousand dollars of expenses gives $2,500.00 with $1,000.00 refundable, or $208.33 a month of value.
The formula favors the first dollars. One hundred percent of the first $2,000 plus a quarter of the next $2,000 sets the $2,500 ceiling.
Refundable means cash back. Up to $1,000 returns even with zero tax owed, which helps students and young workers most.
Eligibility gates the math. Four years of undergraduate study, enrollment intensity, income phaseouts, and conduct rules all apply.

- Expenses: $4,000 qualified.
- First: min(2000, 4000) = $2,000.
- Second: 0.25 x min(2000, 2000) = $500.
- Credit: 2000 + 500 = $2,500.00, capped at $2,500.
