What it does

Salad bars run out at the lettuce first. Heads planned from guest counts keep bowls full without wilted extras drowning the fridge.

The tool above divides by course. Twelve side salads need 3 heads with 24 oz of toppings and 3 cups of dressing. Mains double nearly everything.

Courses set the divisor. Side salads split one head across four guests, dinner bowls across two, with hungry teens eating main sizes.

Toppings track guests at two ounces for side and four for main. Cucumbers, tomatoes, and cheese fill cups faster than leaves alone.

Dressing follows at a quarter cup per side guest. Cold crisp greens carry it, while warm wet leaves slide it to the bowl bottom.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial (oz, cups) or metric (g, ml).
  2. Enter guests.
  3. Pick side or main.
  4. Read heads first.
  5. Read toppings next.
  6. Read dressing and chill greens.

Formula

Heads = ceil(guests / 4 side, / 2 main). Toppings = guests x 2 or 4 oz.

meal

Metric toppings are 60 g side and 115 g main per guest, with 60 ml and 120 ml dressings. Heads stay each way.

Limits

  • Counts only. Proteins need plans.
  • Head sizes vary by type.
  • Dressing tastes vary widely.
  • Allergies need labeled bowls.

Common mistakes

  • One head for twelve sides.
  • Warm wet greens under dressing.
  • One dressing for a split crowd.
  • No tongs, then mixed bowls.
  • Dressing hours early.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

20 guests, side?

Heads are ceil(20 / 4) = 5. Toppings are 20 x 2 = 40 oz. Dressing is 20 x 0.25 = 5 cups.

8 guests, main?

Heads are ceil(8 / 2) = 4. Toppings are 8 x 4 = 32 oz. Dressing is 8 x 0.5 = 4 cups.

Questions

Lettuce heads?

Divide guests by 4 for side or 2 for main. Here ceil(12 / 4) = 3 heads.

Toppings?

Two ounces per guest for side, 4 for main. Here 12 x 2 = 24 oz.

Dressing?

A quarter cup per guest for side, half for main. Here 12 x 0.25 = 3 cups.

Side or main?

Side suits starters, main suits dinner bowls. Hungry crowds eat main sizes either way.

Prep ahead?

Yes. Wash, dry, and chill ahead; wet greens wilt dressing on contact.

Chicken included?

No. Proteins and grains need their own counts.
