What it does

Soup scales kindly until the pot runs out. A measured total keeps second bowls flowing without a thin watery stretch at the end.

The tool above multiplies guests by bowls. Twelve guests at 1.5 cups need 4.5 qt in 1 pot with 2 loaves. The metric match is 12 at 350 ml for 4.2 L.

Serving size follows the meal. One cup suits soup beside sandwiches, 1.5 suits dinner bowls, and 2 plus suits breadless hungry tables.

Pots divide the total at six quarts. One pot covers to 24 dinner bowls, two cover to 48, and splitting flavors across pots pleases mixed tables.

Bread tracks guests at one loaf per six. Crusty loaves stretch soup nights further than crackers at equal cost.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial (cups, qt) or metric (ml, L).
  2. Enter guests.
  3. Enter serving: 1.5 cups or 350 ml suits dinner.
  4. Read total first.
  5. Read pots next.
  6. Read loaves and simmer early.

Formula

Quarts = guests x cups / 4. Pots = ceil(quarts / 6). Loaves = ceil(guests / 6).
guests
Headcount eating soup.
serving
Bowl size in cups or ml.

Metric uses ml with liters and 5.7 L pots. Bread stays one loaf per 6 guests both ways.

Worked example

Example: 12 guests, 1.5 cups

Imperial defaults: 12 guests at 1.5 cups. These are also the default values, so the page opens on this answer.

  1. Guests: 12.
  2. Serving: 1.5 cups.
  3. Cups: 12 x 1.5 = 18 cups.
  4. Quarts: 18 / 4 = 4.5 qt.
  5. Pots: ceil(4.5 / 6) = 1 pot. Loaves: ceil(12 / 6) = 2.
  6. Tool shows 4.5 qt, 1 pot (6 qt), 2 loaves.

Limits

  • Volume math only. Recipes set simmer and safety.
  • Thick chowders serve fewer bowls per quart.
  • Toppings and salads need own counts.
  • Diet needs split pots.

Common mistakes

  • Planning side cup sizes for dinner bowls.
  • One pot for forty guests.
  • Stretching thin with water at the end.
  • No bread, then short bowls.
  • Holding lukewarm for hours.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

20 guests at 1.5 cups?

20 x 1.5 = 30 cups. Quarts are 30 / 4 = 7.5 qt. Pots are ceil(7.5 / 6) = 2 pots.

10 guests at 350 ml metric?

10 x 350 = 3500 ml, or 3.5 L. Pots are ceil(3.5 / 5.7) = 1 pot.

Questions

Soup for 12 guests?

Multiply guests by cups, then divide by 4. Here 12 x 1.5 / 4 = 4.5 qt.

Cups per person?

Plan 1 cup for sides, 1.5 for dinner bowls, 2 to 3 for hungry crowds or breadless tables.

How many stockpots?

Divide quarts by 6 and round up. Here ceil(4.5 / 6) = 1 pot.

Bread loaves?

One loaf per 6 guests. Here ceil(12 / 6) = 2 loaves.

Broth or chowder?

Yes. Broth soups stretch further than chowders at equal quarts.

Does this cook it?

No. Simmer times and food safety need recipes.
