Reading Fluency Calculator
Score oral reading with correct words per minute and accuracy.
What it does
Oral fluency pairs speed with correctness. Words correct per minute, or WCPM, counts words read minus errors, divided by minutes. Accuracy divides the same correct count by words attempted.
The tool above takes words, errors, and minutes and returns WCPM, accuracy, and errors per minute. The defaults 150, 5, and 1 match the worked example, so the page opens showing 145 WCPM.
A 145 WCPM at 96.7 percent reads differently than 145 at 85 percent. The first suggests pacing work, the second decoding work. Errors per minute adds load context: 5 per minute is heavier than 1.
Use one minute timed reads with grade level passages for screening. Compare to grade norms, track across weeks, and listen for error type, not just counts. Prosody and comprehension sit outside these three numbers.
This page shows the formulas, one full hand checked example at 150/5/1, a reference table, and practice checks that run through the tool.
How to use
- Count total words attempted in the passage chunk.
- Count errors: skips, swaps, and long stalls per your rubric.
- Type minutes as a decimal, 1 for one minute.
- Read WCPM as correct words per minute.
- Read Accuracy as correct over attempted.
- Track errors per minute alongside WCPM.
Formula
- correct
- Words read correctly.
- WCPM
- Correct words per minute.
- accuracy
- Correct share in percent.
Errors cannot exceed words read. Minutes must top 0. Retells and prosody need rubrics beyond counts.
Worked example
Example: 150 words, 5 errors, 1 minute
A timed read logs 150 attempted with 5 errors in 1 minute.
- Correct: 150 minus 5 = 145.
- WCPM: 145 / 1 = 145 WCPM.
- Accuracy: 100 x 145 / 150 = 96.6667 %.
- Round: 96.7 %.
- Errors per minute: 5 / 1 = 5 /min.
- Read: fast with solid accuracy.
Reference table
| Words/errors/min | WCPM | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| 150/5/1 | 145 WCPM | 96.7 % |
| 200/2/2 | 99 WCPM | 99.0 % |
| 100/0/1 | 100 WCPM | 100.0 % |
Limits
- Counts only. Prosody and comprehension need other tools.
- Passage level controls difficulty. Cross level scores do not compare.
- One minute screens. Longer reads drift with stamina.
- Error definitions vary by rubric.
Common mistakes
- Dividing total words instead of correct words by minutes.
- Allowing errors above words read.
- Timing in seconds without converting to minutes.
- Comparing across grade levels as if equal.
- Ignoring error type behind identical WCPM.

Questions
What is WCPM?
Correct words per minute: (words minus errors) over minutes.
145 here?
150 minus 5 over 1 minute.
Accuracy?
Correct over attempted times 100. Here 96.7 %.
Good accuracy?
Bands vary by program. Many target high 90s for independent reading.
Errors per minute?
Errors over minutes. Load signal alongside WCPM.
One minute enough?
For screens yes. Diagnostics add longer reads and retells.
