What it does

Assignment briefs speak pages while drafts count words, and the bridge between them is spacing. At 12 point Times with inch margins, a double spaced page holds about 250 words, so 1500 words fill 6 pages. The tool above divides any count that way and adds a read aloud estimate.

The default is a classic undergraduate essay: 1500 words, double spaced, 6 pages at 250 words each, reading aloud in near 7 minutes at conversational pace. Flip to single spacing and the same draft squeezes onto 3 pages without losing a word.

University writing guides back the setup. Purdue OWL formatting pages set double spacing with inch margins across APA, MLA, and Chicago styles, which is exactly the layout the 250 figure assumes. Change the font, size, or margins and the density drifts with them.

Headings, tables, and block quotes bend real papers off the estimate. A methods section full of tables reads shorter in pages than its word count suggests, while a dialogue heavy script reads longer. Treat the result as a planning figure and let the template rule on submission day.

How to use

  1. Count the words in the draft.
  2. Type the total into the tool.
  3. Pick double or single spacing.
  4. Read pages first for length planning.
  5. Use read time to rehearse presentations.

Formula

Pages = words / 250 double, words / 500 single. Read minutes = words / 225.
words
Total draft word count.
250 / 500
Words per page double versus single at 12 pt Times, inch margins.
225
Spoken words per minute for the read estimate.

Rule of thumb for standard 12 point Times layouts. Arial, Calibri, wide margins, and paragraph gaps each shift density 5 to 15%.

Worked example

Example: 1500 words double spaced

Defaults: 1500 words, double spacing.

  1. Density: double spacing holds 250 words a page.
  2. Pages: 1500 / 250 = 6 pages.
  3. Read: 1500 / 225 = 6.67, round to 7 min read.
  4. Single check: 1500 / 500 = 3 pages.
  5. Tool shows 6 pages, 250 words/page, 7 min read.

Limits

  • Standard layout assumed; fonts and margins shift results.
  • Tables and figures paginate outside word math.
  • Title and reference pages excluded.
  • Read pace varies by speaker and text difficulty.

Common mistakes

  • Using single density for a double spaced brief.
  • Counting references toward the body requirement.
  • Ignoring heading and table space.
  • Trusting word processor pages across templates.
  • Rehearsing silently instead of aloud.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

500 words single spaced?

500 / 500 = 1 page, about 2 min read.

2000 words double spaced?

2000 / 250 = 8 pages, about 9 min read.

750 words double spaced?
