What it does

Popcorn multiplies near fourfold by volume. One ounce of kernels (2 tablespoons) pops about a quart, so 2 ounces fill 8 cups across 4 two-cup servings near 248 kcal air-popped. Weight in predicts volume out with unusual reliability.

The tool above runs that 4x rule with servings and calories attached. Enter kernel ounces and it prints popped cups, 2-cup servings, and air-popped kcal. Defaults show 2 oz at 8 cups; 4 oz fills 16 cups near 496 kcal.

The Popcorn Board publishes both halves. Its yield tables give 1 oz to a quart with quarter-cup to 2 quarts, and its nutrition tables give 30.8 kcal per air-popped cup (35 with oil). USDA FoodData mirrors the 31 kcal figure with whole-grain status behind it.

Kernel age decides the pop. Moisture near 13.5 % explodes best while dried-out jars leave duds; test old kernels in half batches before movie night. Oil changes calories, not volume: count ~4 kcal extra per cup, salt after.

How to use

  1. Weigh kernels in ounces.
  2. Read popped cups first.
  3. Read 2-cup servings.
  4. Read air-popped calories.
  5. Salt after popping.
  6. Test old kernels in halves.

Formula

Cups = oz x 4. Servings = cups / 2. Kcal = cups x 31 (air-popped).
oz
Kernel weight in ounces, 0 to 500.

Popcorn Board: 1 oz (2 Tbsp) pops 1 quart; nutrition 30.8 kcal/cup air-popped matches USDA 31.

Worked example

Example: 2 oz kernels

Defaults: 2 oz kernels.

  1. Inputs: 2 oz kernels (1/4 cup).
  2. Cups: 2 x 4 = 8 cups popped.
  3. Servings: 8 / 2 = 4 two-cup servings.
  4. Calories: 8 x 31 = 248 kcal air-popped.
  5. Tool shows 8 cups popped, 4 servings, 248 kcal.

Limits

  • Average yields only. Hybrids and age vary.
  • Air-popped kcal; oil and butter add more.
  • Duds excluded from cup counts.
  • Serving size conventions vary.

Common mistakes

  • Scooping volume instead of weighing.
  • Counting oil calories as air-popped.
  • Popping ancient dry kernels whole.
  • Salting before popping (burns).
  • Ignoring dud rates on old jars.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

1 oz kernels?

1 x 4 = 4 cups. Servings 4 / 2 = 2. Kcal 4 x 31 = 124.

4 oz kernels?

4 x 4 = 16 cups. Servings 16 / 2 = 8. Kcal 16 x 31 = 496.

Questions

How many cups per ounce?

Ounces times 4: 2 oz pops 8 cups. One ounce (2 Tbsp) pops a quart.

How are servings figured?

Popped cups over 2: 8 cups make 4 servings.

How many calories?

About 31 kcal a cup air-popped (30.8 precise); oil adds ~4 a cup.

Does oil change yield?

Yes. Oil-popped runs ~35 a cup with the same 4x volume math.

Do old kernels pop worse?

Yes. Old kernels pop poorly; moisture near 13.5 % pops best. Test half batches.

What about unpopped kernels?

Yes. Unpopped duds (old maids) run a few percent; subtract them from cups mentally.
