Pizza Order Calculator
Pizzas to order from guest count, slices per guest, and slices per pie.
What it does
Ordering pizza for a group fails in one direction only: too little. A short order stalls the party while someone phones the shop, but two spare pies reheat well and keep the evening moving. The tool above turns the headcount into a pie count with that buffer built in.
The math is plain. Total slices equal guests times slices per guest, and pies equal that total divided by slices per pizza, always rounded up. University catering guides back the planning rates: Augustana College catering notes two slices per person as the usual average for its 16 inch pies, and Utah State catering lists 12 slices per 16 inch pizza on its menu.
Appetite sets the middle number. Two slices each suits a lunch with sides or a buffet where pizza shares the table. Three suits pizza as the main food, which is the default here. Four suits teens, athletes, and late night crowds. Children land at one to two slices, so a kids table of ten needs about three eight slice pies.
The pie cut matters as much as the headcount. A large cut into 8 gives 60 slices from 8 pies, while the same pies cut into 12 give 96. When the shop will not confirm the cut, plan on 8 and treat extra slices as insurance.
How to use
- Count the guests who will eat pizza, counting children as half portions.
- Pick slices per guest: 2 for a light lunch or buffet, 3 when pizza is the main food, 4 for hungry groups.
- Enter slices per pizza from the shop. When unsure, call and ask for the cut.
- Read the pizza count first, then total slices and spare slices.
- If spare slices read 0 and the group is hungry, add one more pizza for safety.
- For mixed sizes, run the tool once per size and add the pies.
Formula
- guests
- Headcount eating pizza.
- slices per guest
- Slices each person eats: 2 light, 3 main, 4 hungry.
- slices per pizza
- Slices the shop cuts per pie: often 8.
Ceil means always round up to the next whole pizza. The spare slice count tells you the buffer: 0 means the order is exact, 4 or more means comfortable cover for extra appetite.
Worked example
Example: 20 guests at 3 slices each
20 guests, 3 slices each, pies cut into 8. These are also the default values, so the page opens on this answer.
- Guests times appetite: 20 x 3 = 60 slices.
- Divide by the pie cut: 60 / 8 = 7.5.
- Round up: 7.5 becomes 8 pizzas.
- Check capacity: 8 x 8 = 64 slices, so 4 spare slices.
- Tool shows 8 pizzas, 60 slices, 4 spare slices.
Reference table
| Pie | Slices | Serves |
|---|---|---|
| Small 10 in | 6 | 2 to 3 people |
| Medium 12 in | 8 | 3 to 4 people |
| Large 14 in | 8 to 10 | 4 to 5 people |
| Extra large 16 in | 8 or 12 | 5 to 6 people |
Limits
- Counts slices, not hunger for specific toppings. Split the pies across flavors yourself.
- Assumes even eating. Real groups vary, which the spare slices absorb.
- Ignores dietary needs: gluten free and vegan guests need separate pies.
- Applies to standard round pies. Sheet pizzas and squares cut differently.
Common mistakes
- Guessing the pie cut instead of asking the shop.
- Planning 2 slices each when pizza is the only food.
- Rounding down to save a pie and running short.
- Forgetting children eat too, at 1 to 2 slices.
- Ordering all of one topping for a mixed crowd.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
30 guests, 2 slices each, 8 per pizza?
30 x 2 = 60 slices. 60 / 8 = 7.5, so 8 pizzas with 4 spare slices.
50 guests, 3 slices each, 12 per pizza?
50 x 3 = 150 slices. 150 / 12 = 12.5, so 13 pizzas with 6 spare slices.
12 guests, 4 slices each, 8 per pizza?
12 x 4 = 48 slices. 48 / 8 = 6 exactly, so 6 pizzas with 0 spare slices.
Questions
How many pizzas for 20 people?
Multiply guests by slices each, divide by slices per pizza, and round up. For 20 guests at 3 slices with 8 slice pies: 60 / 8 = 7.5, so 8 pizzas.
How many slices per person should I plan?
Plan 2 slices per adult when other food is served, 3 when pizza is the main food, and 4 for teens or athletes. Count children at 1 to 2 slices.
How many slices are in a pizza?
Shops cut small pies into 6, medium and large into 8 to 10, and extra large into 8 or 12. Ask the shop before ordering, since the cut sets the math.
Should I round up or down?
Yes. Leftover pizza reheats well, while a short order stalls the party. The tool rounds up for this reason.
What if guests arrive very hungry?
Add about one extra pizza per 8 to 10 guests, or move the whole group from 2 to 3 slices each. Hungry arrival times and late nights both push counts up.
How do I count children?
Count each child as half an adult: 1 to 2 slices. A table of 10 kids at 2 slices needs 20 slices, which is 3 eight slice pies.
