Microwave Time Calculator
Convert microwave times across oven wattages with stir guidance.
What it does
Microwave recipes assume a wattage. The same bowl needs longer in a small dorm box and less in a powerful family unit.
The tool above scales time by the watt ratio. Three minutes at 1000 W becomes 4 min 17 s at 700 W, or 143 % of recipe time. Watts are global, so no unit toggle is needed.
Ratios run both ways. Weaker ovens stretch past the recipe, stronger ones shrink below it, with dense stews needing margin either way.
Stirring beats precision. Halfway stirs even out hot and cold spots that watt math cannot see.
Temps close safety. Leftovers need steaming through to the center, whatever the converted clock says.
How to use
- Enter recipe minutes and seconds.
- Enter recipe watts: 1000 suits many boxes.
- Enter your watts: check the door label.
- Read new time first.
- Read seconds for timers.
- Read percent and stir halfway.
Formula
- recipe time
- Recipe heat time.
- recipe watts
- Recipe oven watts.
- your watts
- Your oven watts.
Seconds total recipe minutes times 60 plus seconds. Percent shows new over recipe for quick scaling.
Worked example
Example: 3 min at 1000 W in 700 W
Defaults: 3 min recipe at 1000 W cooked in a 700 W oven. These are also the default values, so the page opens on this answer.
- Recipe: 3 min at 1000 W, so 180 s.
- Ratio: 1000 / 700 = 1.4286.
- Time: 180 x 1.4286 = 257 s after rounding.
- Split: 257 s is 4 min 17 s.
- Tool shows 4 min 17 s, 257 s, 143 % of recipe time.
Reference table
| Your oven | Time | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 700 W | 4 min 17 s | 143 % |
| 800 W | 3 min 45 s | 125 % |
| 1000 W | 3 min 00 s | 100 % |
| 1200 W | 2 min 30 s | 83 % |
Limits
- Time math only. Density shifts results.
- Stirring and rests matter as much.
- Door labels may overstate watts.
- Safety needs thermometer checks.
Common mistakes
- Same minutes across wattages.
- No stir, then frozen centers.
- Full power for delicate dairy.
- Sealed containers that burst.
- Skipping rest time after beeps.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
2 min at 1000 W in 800 W?
120 x 1000 / 800 = 150 s, or 2 min 30 s. Share is 150 / 120 x 100 = 125 %.
1 min at 700 W in 1000 W?
60 x 700 / 1000 = 42 s. Share is 42 / 60 x 100 = 70 %.
Questions
3 min at 1000 W in 700 W?
Multiply seconds by recipe watts over yours. Here 180 x 1000 / 700 = 257 s, or 4 min 17 s.
Longer or shorter?
Lower watts need longer than the recipe. Here 143 % of recipe time.
Stirring needed?
Stir and rest halfway. Edges race ahead of centers in every microwave.
Dense foods differ?
Yes. Dense foods and big portions need extra past the watt math.
Food safety?
Probe leftovers to steaming through. Time math never replaces temps.
Defrost times?
No. Defrosting needs weight based plans.
