What it does

A horse stall needs enough room for the horse to stand, turn around, lie down, and rise without hitting a wall. The usual planning rule starts with body length, measured from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock. Multiply that length by 1.5 to get the minimum side of a square stall.

The rule has a floor. Even a pony gets a stall of at least 10 ft (120 in) on each side, because a smaller box makes it hard to lie down and get up safely. A 96 in horse, which is 8 ft from shoulder to buttock, needs a 12 ft side. That gives a 12 ft x 12 ft stall and 144 ft2 of floor.

Foaling stalls are larger. A mare and a newborn foal need room for the mare to lie out and for the foal to move without being trapped in a corner. A common minimum is 16 ft x 16 ft, or 192 in on each side. Some farms use 16 ft x 20 ft or larger, and a mare with a large foal may need more.

Door and partition sizes are also part of the plan. A standard sliding or swinging stall door is about 4 ft wide and 8 ft high. Partitions between stalls are often 8 ft high, with a gap at the bottom for airflow and cleaning. These are typical dimensions, not a building code.

The calculator returns a square stall. Many barns use rectangular stalls, and a 10 ft x 14 ft stall can provide the same floor area as a smaller square. Keep the short side at or above the minimum so the horse can turn and lie down without difficulty.

How to use

  1. Choose imperial or metric units.
  2. Measure the horse from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock.
  3. Enter that body length.
  4. Choose a standard stall or a foaling stall.
  5. Read the minimum side, floor area, door, and partition suggestions.
  6. Round up to a practical barn dimension and check the aisle and door swing.

Formula

side = max(120 in, 1.5 x body length). Foaling stall: side = max(192 in, side). area = side^2.
L
Body length from point of shoulder to point of buttock, in inches.
side
Minimum square stall side, in inches.
area
Floor area, in square feet when the side is in feet.

The 1.5 factor gives a stall wide enough for the horse to turn and lie down. The 120 in floor and the 192 in foaling minimum override the factor when the horse is small. A rectangular stall should keep its short side at or above the calculated side.

Worked example

Example: 96 in body length

Imperial defaults: 96 in from shoulder to buttock, standard stall. The metric mirror is 244 cm.

  1. Multiply body length by 1.5: 96 x 1.5 = 144 in.
  2. Compare with the 120 in minimum: 144 is larger, so the side is 144 in.
  3. Convert to feet: 144 / 12 = 12 ft, giving a 12 ft x 12 ft stall.
  4. Square the side in feet: 12 x 12 = 144 ft2.
  5. The suggested door is 4 ft x 8 ft and the partition is 8 ft high.
  6. The tool shows 12 ft x 12 ft, 144 ft2, a 4 ft x 8 ft door, and an 8 ft partition.
  7. In metric mode the same horse at 244 cm gives 3.66 m x 3.66 m and 13.4 m2.

Limits

  • The rule is a planning guide, not a welfare standard. Local rules, breed society guidance, and veterinarian advice can set different minimums.
  • It assumes a square stall. A rectangular stall needs its short side checked against the calculated side.
  • It does not account for stall rest, injury, foaling complications, or a horse that kicks or weaves.
  • Door, partition, and ceiling heights vary with barn design and horse size; the suggestions here are common values.

Common mistakes

  • Using height instead of body length, which produces a stall that is too small for a long-bodied horse.
  • Skipping the 10 ft floor for ponies and small horses.
  • Building a foaling stall at the standard 12 ft size.
  • Forgetting aisle width, door swing, and head clearance when fitting the stall into a barn.
  • Measuring the body along the back instead of from the point of shoulder to point of buttock.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

A horse measures 80 in from shoulder to buttock. What is the minimum standard stall?

10 ft x 10 ft and 100 ft2. The 1.5 factor gives 120 in, which equals the 10 ft minimum.

A horse measures 100 in. What is the minimum standard stall?

12.5 ft x 12.5 ft and 156.3 ft2.

A 90 in mare needs a foaling stall. What size does the calculator return?

16 ft x 16 ft and 256 ft2, because the foaling minimum overrides the 1.5 factor.

Questions

How do I measure body length?

Measure from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock with the horse standing square on level ground. Keep the tape level and follow the body line.

Is 12 ft x 12 ft enough for a large horse?

For a 96 in body length, yes. For a longer horse the 1.5 factor gives a larger side, and a 12 ft stall may be too small.

How big should a foaling stall be?

A common minimum is 16 ft x 16 ft. Some farms use 16 ft x 20 ft or larger, especially for large breeds.

How high should stall partitions be?

Many barns use 8 ft partitions. The right height depends on the horse, the barn, and whether horses can see and touch each other safely.

Can a stall be rectangular?

Yes. Keep the short side at or above the calculated minimum and provide at least the same floor area. A 10 ft x 14 ft stall, for example, gives 140 ft2.

Does the calculator include an outdoor run?

No. It sizes the inside stall only. A run adds space but does not replace the need for a stall that lets the horse turn and lie down.
