Horse Height Converter
Horse hands, inches, and cm converter.
What it does
Horses measure in hands, where one hand spans four inches. Notation reads hands point inches of remainder: 15.2 hh means fifteen hands plus two inches, or sixty two inches total. The point is a separator, never a decimal.
The tool above converts both ways. With 62 inches the result is 15.2 hh with 157.5 cm. With 157 cm the math gives 61.8 inches and reads 15.1 hh. A flat 60 inches reads 15.0 hh, sitting above the 14.2 hh pony line.
Measuring point matters as much as math. Withers height runs from level ground to the ridge between the shoulders, with the horse square and head neutral. Shoes, surface, and posture each move the tape, so papers follow stick rules.
This page converts notation only. It does not certify breed papers, weight tapes, or show eligibility. For records, follow the registry measuring protocol.
How to use
- Pick imperial (in) or metric (cm).
- Enter the withers height.
- Read hands notation first.
- Read total inches and cm.
- Check pony line at 14.2 hh.
- Confirm papers with a stick measure.
Formula
- inches
- Withers height in inches (converted from cm when metric).
- hands
- Full 4 inch hands.
- rem
- Whole leftover inches 0-3 after the point.
Hands notation hands.inches with remainder 0-3. At fractional inches the remainder floors, so papers may differ by rounding rules. Miniatures and drafts use the same hand.
