What it does

Gift wrap is surface plus folds: twice the three face pairs with margin for overlaps and tucked ends. This page runs that area in square feet or square meters and turns it into standard rolls.

The default shoebox is 12 by 10 by 6 in. Faces total 504 in2, waste lifts it to 579.6 in2 or 4 ft2, which fits in 1 roll. Metric defaults convert the box to 30 by 25 by 15 cm and give 0.36 m2, also 1 roll.

Waste is structural, not spare. End folds double paper at corners, patterns need matching across faces, and creases eat length on deep boxes. Thin paper tears sooner and tempts extra overlap.

Roll size rules buying. Cut from one roll across small gifts, since buying per gift wastes cores and ends. Keep the pattern direction running the long way.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial or metric first.
  2. Enter box length, width, height.
  3. Read paper first in the active units.
  4. Read rolls next.
  5. Cut one face extra for patterned match.

Formula

Paper = 2 x (LW + LH + WH) x 1.15. Rolls = ceil(paper / 25 ft2 or 2.3 m2).
L
Box length in the active units.
W
Box width in the active units.
H
Box height in the active units.

Surface is the closed box; 15% covers overlaps, folds, and diagonal end tucks. Rolls assumed 25 ft2 (2.3 m2); small rolls need the count scaled. Cylinders and soft bags need measuring around, not box math.

Worked example

Example: shoebox gift

12 by 10 by 6 in box (metric 30 by 25 by 15 cm).

  1. Faces: 2 x (120 + 72 + 60) = 504 in2.
  2. With 15%: 504 x 1.15 = 579.6 in2.
  3. Feet: 579.6 / 144 = 4 ft2.
  4. Rolls: 4 / 25 = 0.16, up to 1 roll.
  5. Metric: 30 by 25 by 15 cm needs 0.36 m2.
  6. Tool shows 4 ft2 imperial and 0.36 m2 metric.

Limits

  • Box shapes only. Cylinders differ.
  • Fixed 15% waste. Patterns need more.
  • Rolls fixed at 25 ft2 / 2.3 m2.
  • Ribbon and tags excluded.

Common mistakes

  • Wrapping surface without waste.
  • Mixing inches with feet mid chain.
  • Buying per gift instead of per roll.
  • Cutting pattern upside down.
  • Measuring the gift, not the box.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

8 by 6 by 6 in box?

2.1 ft2 (2 x (48 + 48 + 36) x 1.15 = 304 in2).

10 by 10 by 12 in box?

5.4 ft2 (2 x (100 + 120 + 120) x 1.15 = 782 in2).

Questions

How much paper?

Surface times 1.15. Here 4 ft2.

How many rolls?

Paper over 25 ft2, rounded up. Here 1 roll.

What is that in metric?

0.36 m2 and 1 roll for 30 by 25 by 15 cm.

Bows included?

Odd shapes and bows need extra past box math.

Double wrap?

Yes for planning. Double wrap fragile boxes separately.

Supplies included?

No. Tape, tags, and ribbon sit outside paper math.
