What it does

Moving estimates run on home size because belongings scale with rooms. Studios pack near fifteen boxes into a ten foot truck while four bedroom homes need a hundred boxes and a twenty six footer.

The tool above maps home size to box count, tape rolls, and truck size. It returns all three for planning one trip.

Box mix matters as much as count. Books and dishes want small heavy boxes while pillows and linens fill big light ones, and every box needs a room label on two sides.

One trip beats two on every axis: truck cost, fuel, elevator bookings, and backs. Size the truck to the estimate plus margin, not to optimism.

How to use

  1. Pick the closest home size.
  2. Buy the box count in mixed sizes.
  3. Add tape per the count.
  4. Reserve the truck size with margin for bulky items.

Formula

Lookup by home size: boxes 15/30/45/70/100, tape ceil(boxes/25), trucks 10/14/17/22/26 ft.
boxes
Mixed size estimate per home size.
/ 25
Boxes sealed per tape roll.
truck ft
Box length fitting the load in one trip.

Minimalists and collectors both break averages. Walk each room counting large items to adjust up or down.

Worked example

Example: 2 bedroom home

Two bedroom apartment, average stuff.

  1. Boxes: 45 mixed sizes.
  2. Tape: ceil(45/25) = 2 rolls.
  3. Truck: 17 ft box truck.
  4. Pack room by room, heavy boxes small.

Limits

  • Averages only. Lifestyles vary enormously.
  • Bulky items need truck margin beyond boxes.
  • Long distance needs inventory detail, not estimates.
  • Storage unit math differs from truck math.

Common mistakes

  • Buying one box size for everything.
  • Underestimating kitchens and books.
  • Skipping labels until unloading chaos.
  • Reserving the smallest truck to save little.
  • Packing heavy boxes too big to lift.
