What it does

Free throw percent distills trips to the line. Eight makes in ten tries is eighty percent with two misses. Coaches track it to rank shooters and close games.

The tool above takes makes and attempts and returns percent, misses, and makes per ten. The defaults 8 and 10 match the worked example, so the page opens showing 80.0 percent.

Percent is makes over attempts times 100. Misses subtract. Per ten divides percent by ten for rotation math: 80 percent makes 8 per 10. Small samples swing wildly, so quote attempts alongside percent.

Use this for players, teams, and drills. Combine with volume to value shooters: high percent on few tries matters less than solid percent on many.

This page shows the formula, one full hand checked example at 8 of 10, a reference table, and practice checks that run through the tool.

How to use

  1. Count makes.
  2. Count attempts of 1 or more.
  3. Type both numbers.
  4. Read percent as the main result.
  5. Read misses for shortfall.
  6. Use per 10 for quick lineup math.

Formula

Percent = 100 x makes / attempts. Misses = attempts minus makes.
makes
Shots made.
attempts
Shots tried, 1 or more.
per 10
Percent over 10.

Makes cannot top attempts. Zero attempts stops with an error.

Worked example

Example: 8 of 10

Shooter makes 8 of 10 free throws. Find percent.

  1. Divide: 8 / 10 = 0.8.
  2. Percent: 0.8 x 100 = 80.0 %.
  3. Misses: 10 minus 8 = 2.
  4. Per 10: 80 / 10 = 8 /10.
  5. Check: 8 + 2 = 10 attempts.
  6. Quote as 80.0 percent on 10.
