What it does

Youth hoops scale to shooters before shooters scale to hoops. Ages 7-8 play 8 ft rims with Size 5 balls, ages 9-11 play 9 ft with Size 6, and ages 12+ graduate to regulation 10 ft. Right heights build form; adult rims build bad habits early.

The tool above runs USA Basketball age bands. Enter age with league ball, and it prints rim height, ball size, and metric rim. Age 10 gives 9 ft with Size 6; age 14 gives 10 ft with Size 7 for boys and Size 6 for girls.

The NBA partnership publishes the bands. Its youth standards set 8 ft and Size 5 for 7-8 with 9 ft and Size 6 for 9-11, while NBA Rule 1 fixes regulation rims at 10 ft above and parallel. Grades 9-12 adopt FIBA rules where unlisted.

Fixed 10 ft hoops still work where adjustables are absent. The 8/9 ft bands apply when possible per NBA wording, so driveway games continue at 10 ft with lighter balls. Zone defenses and threes wait for older bands.

  2. Pick boy/girl for older ball sizing.
  3. Read rim height first.
