What it does

Tennis courts run to exact feet. Doubles spans 78 by 36 with singles sidelines 4.5 ft inside each side, service lines 21 ft from the net, and a net sagging from 3.5 ft at the posts to 3 ft at the center strap. Every line has a number.

The tool above prints regulation dims, area, and net heights for either game in feet or meters. Doubles gives 78 x 36 ft over 2,808 sq ft; singles gives 78 x 27 ft over 2,106. Metric mirrors read 23.77 x 10.97 m and 23.77 x 8.23 m.

The ITF writes these numbers into the Rules of Tennis with USTA printing identical text: 78 ft long, 27 singles and 36 doubles wide, posts 3 ft outside at 3.5 ft high, center strap at 3 ft, service lines 21 ft from net. Runoff and surface guidance fills facility manuals beyond the lines.

Alleys change doubles geometry. The 702 sq ft of tramline rewards angled volleys that singles sidelines erase, while service boxes stay fixed at 21 by 13.5 ft per side. Build to the lines first; fences and runoff follow facility guides.

How to use

  1. Pick doubles or singles.
  2. Pick imperial (ft) or metric (m).
  3. Read dims first, then area.
  4. Read net heights for posts and strap.
  5. Mark service lines 21 ft from net.
  6. Allow runoff space beyond lines.

Formula

Doubles 78 x 36 ft; singles 78 x 27 ft. Area = L x W. Net 3 ft center / 3.5 ft posts. Service 21 ft from net.
