Essay Paragraph Calculator
Turn word count and words per paragraph into paragraph count and page length.
What it does
Word counts tell length but paragraphs tell structure. Twelve hundred words at 150 each need 8 paragraphs, which turns a vague target into intro, six body parts, and closing.
The tool above takes total words and words per paragraph. It returns paragraph count, actual words each, and double spaced pages, so outlines can be cut to fit before drafting starts.
This math fits even body paragraphs with one target size. It does not fit dialogue heavy fiction, lab reports with fixed sections, or citation dense pages where quotes inflate words.
Writing guidance frames the same unit: paragraphs carry one idea with support, and coaching handouts stress drafting by idea rather than filling lines. Page estimates then follow at about 250 words double spaced.
Set the target from the prompt first. A 1,000 word cap with 200 word paragraphs allows 5, so plan 5 ideas, not 8.
How to use
- Enter total words from the prompt.
- Enter target words per paragraph.
- Read paragraphs needed first for the outline.
- Read actual average to tune the target.
- Read double spaced pages for the length check.
- Assign one idea per paragraph slot.
Formula
- words
- Total words the draft must hold.
- per paragraph
- Target words in each paragraph.
- pages
- Double spaced pages at 250 words each.
Rounds up since partial paragraphs still count. Quotes count as words here. Headings and references lists sit outside body paragraph math.
Worked example
Example: 1,200 words at 150 per paragraph
Total words 1200, words per paragraph 150.
- Paragraphs: 1200 / 150 = 8 paragraphs.
- Actual: 1200 / 8 = 150 words each.
- Pages: 1200 / 250 = 4.8 pages.
- Tool shows 8 paragraphs, 150 words each, 4.8 pages.
- Outline: intro plus 6 body plus closing fits 8 slots.
Reference table
| Per paragraph | Paragraphs | Pages |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 12 paragraphs | 4.8 pages |
| 150 | 8 paragraphs | 4.8 pages |
| 200 | 6 paragraphs | 4.8 pages |
Limits
- Even paragraphs only. Mixed lengths need outline tuning.
- Ignores quotes inflating word counts.
- Page math uses 250 words double spaced standard.
- Section rules for labs and briefs override paragraph counts.
Common mistakes
- Dividing without rounding up to whole paragraphs.
- Aiming paragraph counts without word targets.
- Counting headings as body paragraphs.
- Assuming pages without checking spacing rules.
- Padding with quotes to hit paragraph counts.

About 4.8 double spaced at 250 words a page.
What is a good paragraph length?
Often 100 to 200 words for school essays, one idea each.
