What it does

Car seats graduate four ways as kids grow: rear facing, forward straps, booster, then adult belt, each held to its limits with the back seat through 13. Moving up early only sheds protection.

The tool above takes age with height and weight. It returns the stage with the rule and the next change.

The default 6-year-old at 45 in and 45 lb stays strapped toward 65 lb. A 10-year-old at 54 in still boosters short of 4 ft 9 in.

Stages follow AAP policy with NHTSA recommendations behind them. Both agree on rear-as-long-as-possible and 4 ft 9 in used here.

How to use

  1. Enter the child age.
  2. Enter height in inches.
  3. Enter weight in pounds.
  4. Read the stage first.
  5. Read the rule beside it.
  6. Follow the next-step line.

Formula

Rear under 1 always; to 40 lb. Straps to 65 lb. Booster to 57 in and 8+ yrs. Back seat to 13.
age
Years old.
height
Standing height in inches.
weight
Body weight in pounds.

Typical maker limits (40 rear, 65 straps, 49 in) drive the engine; your seat label rules. Height in inches against 57 (4 ft 9 in) gates the belt stage with age 8 as the second key.

54 under 57: belt-positioning booster.

6 months old?

Always rear facing under age 1, back seat.

Questions

What are the four stages?

Rear facing from birth as long as possible, straps after, booster to 4 ft 9 in and 8 to 12, then belt.

How long does the back seat last?

At least through 12. Every back-seat year beats the front.

What is a proper belt fit?

Lap low on upper thighs, shoulder mid chest, back flat, knees bending at the edge.

Should I graduate early?

No: every step up lowers protection, so max out each seat first.

What seats are unsafe?

Never before an active airbag. Unknown history, expired, or crashed seats retire.

Can kids wear winter coats?

Thin layers under straps only: bulky coats fake tightness and slacken in a crash.
