What it does

Added sugar hides behind grams on labels: divide by four for teaspoons and the numbers turn visual. A 42 gram cola is over ten teaspoons, more than a full day for anyone.

The tool above takes added sugar grams with the limit group. It returns teaspoons with percent of daily max and calories beside them.

The default of 42 g for men reads about 10.5 tsp at 117% of the 36 g max with 168 kcal. The same drink for women reads 168% of the 25 g max.

The limits follow heart association guidance with matching education flyers. Both cap men at 9 teaspoons (36 g) and women at 6 (25 g) a day.

How to use

  1. Read added sugar grams off the label.
  2. Enter the grams for one serving or the day.
  3. Pick the limit group.
  4. Read teaspoons first for the visual.
  5. Read percent of max before a second serving.

Formula

Teaspoons = grams / 4. Percent = grams / limit x 100. Calories = grams x 4. Limits: men 36 g, women 25 g.
/4
Grams per teaspoon of sugar.
36 / 25
Daily maxima in grams, men and women.
x4
Calories per gram of sugar.

Added sugars only: fruit and milk sugars ride outside these limits. Teaspoon figures round to one place; tiny servings read zero with real grams beside them.

Worked example

Example: 42 g cola for men

Defaults: 42 g, men.

  3. Calories: 42 x 4 = 168 kcal.
  4. Women check: 42 / 25 = 168% of max.
  5. Tool shows about 10.5 tsp, 117% of daily max for men (36 g), 168 kcal.

Common mistakes

  • Counting total sugars where only added count.
  • Missing servings per container multipliers.
  • Trusting healthy halos on bars and yogurts.
