Washer Load Weight Calculator
Laundry load weight and size from piece counts.
What it does
Laundry loads are weight jobs: machines wash by tumbling space, detergents dose by weight, and lines dry by pounds of water held. Counting pieces with average weights gives a fast dry weight before the wash. This page adds four common types in pounds or kilograms.
The default is 2 jeans, 4 towels, 6 shirts, and 1 sheet. That is 13 items near 14.8 lb, a Large load. Metric uses converted piece weights for the same basket and gives 6.7 kg with the same band.
Weights are averages, not tags. Bath sheets beat hand towels, raw denim beats stretch, and duvet covers beat flat sheets, so adjust counts when the basket skews heavy. Wet cotton can double dry weight, which matters for lines and racks.
Bands guide splitting, not rating. A Large band still fits many machines, but two medium loads clean better than one packed drum with detergent trapped in folds.
How to use
- Enter counts for each piece type.
- Read weight first in the active units.
- Read item count next.
- Read the size band.
- Split large loads for better wash.
Formula
- jeans
- Count of jeans or heavy pants.
- towels
- Count of bath towels.
- shirts
- Count of shirts or light tops.
- sheets
- Count of bed sheets.
Piece weights are planning averages for dry cotton blends at home sizes. Heavy denim, bath sheets, and bedding run above them while synthetics run below. Bands are 8 and 14 lb (3.6 and 6.4 kg); crowded drums clean poorly even below the machine rating.
Worked example
Example: mixed family load
2 jeans, 4 towels, 6 shirts, 1 sheet.
- Jeans: 2 x 2 = 4 lb.
- Towels: 4 x 1.5 = 6 lb.
- Shirts plus sheets: 6 x 0.5 + 1 x 1.8 = 4.8 lb.
- Total: 4 + 6 + 4.8 = 14.8 lb.
- Metric: same pieces give 6.7 kg, Large load.
- Tool shows 14.8 lb imperial and 6.7 kg metric.
Reference table
| Piece | lb each | kg each |
|---|---|---|
| Jeans | 2 | 0.91 |
| Towel | 1.5 | 0.68 |
| Shirt | 0.5 | 0.23 |
| Sheet | 1.8 | 0.82 |
Limits
- Dry weight only. Wet loads weigh much more.
- Averages per type. Heavy goods vary.
- Four types only. Delicates need grouping.
- Ignores machine cu ft rating.
Common mistakes
- Weighing wet loads against dry bands.
- Packing the drum to the top.
- Dosing detergent for the machine, not the load.
- Mixing heavy lint makers with dark shirts.
- Reading weight as machine capacity.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
5 towels only?
7.5 lb (5 x 1.5), Small load, 5 items.
3 jeans only?
6 lb (3 x 2), Small load.
Questions
How heavy is the load?
Add pieces times each weight. Here 14.8 lb for 13 items.
What size is that?
Under 8 small, 8 to 14 medium, above 14 large. Here Large.
What is that in metric?
6.7 kg for the same 13 items.
What weights are used?
2 lb jeans, 1.5 towels, 0.5 shirts, 1.8 sheets.
Does it cover wet weight?
Yes for planning. Wet loads weigh far more and need their own margin.
Does it check machine size?
No. Machine capacity in cu ft sits outside piece math.
