Restaurant Tip Out Calculator
Split tip outs from sales percent with net tips left.
What it does
Tip outs share sales based gratuities with bussers, bar, and hosts. Houses set a percent of net sales, not of tips, so slow tipping nights still fund support. A 1000 sales night at 3 percent sends 30.00 out before the server keeps the rest.
The tool above takes sales, tips received, and house percent and returns tip out, net kept, and effective share of tips. The defaults 1000, 200, and 3 match the worked example, so the page opens showing $30.00.
Tip out is sales times percent over 100. Net subtracts from tips. Effective divides tip out by tips for context: 30 over 200 is 15.0 percent of tips. When tips run thin, effective climbs even though dollars stay tied to sales.
Policies vary by state and house on who shares and how much. Some split by hours or points instead of flat sales percent. Confirm the house formula and local tip pooling rules before posting the sheet.
This page shows the formula, one full hand checked example at 1000 sales, a reference table, and practice checks that run through the tool.
How to use
- Type net sales for the shift.

- Read Share of tips to judge heavy nights.
Formula

Percent caps at 30 here. If net prints negative, tip out tops tips on a slow night. Points or hours splits need other math.
Worked example
Example: 1000 sales, 200 tips, 3 percent
Server rings 1000 with 200 tips at 3 percent house rate.
- Tip out: 1000 x 3 / 100 = 30.00.
- Net: 200 minus 30 = 170.00.
- Formatted: $30.00 out, $170.00 kept.
- Check: 170 + 30 = 200 tips.
- Slow night note: same 30 out of 100 tips would be 30 percent.
