What it does

Time units refuse decimals: sixty seconds, sixty minutes, twenty four hours, seven days. The base sixty layout dates to Babylonian counting and survives because sixty splits evenly by two, three, four, five, and six.

The tool above converts between milliseconds, seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks. Enter the value, pick both ends, and read the answer with all equivalents below.

Decimal hours cause most payroll confusion. Ninety minutes is 1.5 hours, but forty five minutes is 0.75, not 0.45. Dividing minutes by sixty, never by one hundred, keeps pay math honest.

Months and years stay off this page on purpose. Months run 28 to 31 days and years hold leap days, so they need calendar math like the age calculator provides.

How to use

  1. Enter the time value.
  2. Pick the unit it is written in and the unit you want.
  3. Read the converted line for the answer.
  4. For pay, multiply decimal hours by the rate separately.

Formula

Seconds first: s = value x factor(from). Result = s / factor(to). Factors in seconds: ms 0.001, s 1, min 60, h 3600, day 86,400, week 604,800.
3600
Seconds in one hour (60 x 60).
86,400
Seconds in one day (24 x 3600).
604,800
Seconds in one week (7 x 86,400).

Leap seconds occasionally stretch a day by one second for astronomy, but payroll, sport, and cooking all use the fixed 86,400.

Worked example

Example: 90 minutes to hours

Value 90, from minutes, to hours.

  1. To seconds: 90 x 60 = 5400.
  2. To hours: 5400 / 3600 = 1.5 h.
  3. Result: 90 min = 1.5 h.
  4. Pay check: 1.5 h at $20 is $30.00.

Limits

  • Fixed units only. Months and years need calendar context.
  • Ignores leap seconds and daylight saving jumps.
  • Weeks are exactly seven days here, not work weeks.
  • Time zones sit outside conversion. Add those separately.

Common mistakes

  • Writing 1.30 hours for 1 h 30 min. It is 1.50.
  • Dividing minutes by 100 instead of 60.
  • Rounding each timesheet line before adding.
  • Treating a month as four weeks for pay. It averages 4.33.
  • Forgetting the overnight day in shift math.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

2.5 hours in minutes?

2.5 x 60 = 150 minutes.

10,000 seconds in hours?

10,000 / 3600 = 2.78 h, which is 2 h 46 min 40 s.

Questions

How do I convert minutes to hours?

Divide by 60. Ninety minutes is 1.5 hours, forty five is 0.75.

What is 0.1 hours in minutes?

Six minutes. Payroll tenths run six minutes each.

How many seconds in a day?

86,400. A week holds 604,800.

Why 60 and not 100?

History. Base sixty counting predates decimal time proposals that never caught on.

How do I add times?

Convert all to minutes, add, then convert back. The duration calculator does this for clock times.

What about milliseconds?

Thousandths of a second for sport timing and computing. Human reaction starts near 200 ms.
