Work Zone Taper Length Calculator
Speed and shift to merging and shoulder taper.
What it does
Work zones borrow lanes with geometry, not hope. Taper length converts speed and lateral shift into feet of merge room through two MUTCD formulas split at 40 mph. Short tapers sideswipe; right ones flow.
The tool above applies W times S squared over 60 at low speeds and W times S above, plus the one-third shoulder taper. Enter posted speed and shift width; read both lengths with the formula named.
MUTCD temporary-traffic-control sections carry these taper equations with device, flagger, and visibility provisions around them. ITE timing and design guidance speaks the same language for the signal side of zone planning.
Minimums open the plan; conditions close it. Night, rain, curves, and grades stretch needs past book values, and posted limits should mirror driven speeds. Length sets the merge; devices and enforcement sell it.
How to use
- Enter posted speed in mph.
- Enter lateral shift width in feet.
- Read merging taper length.
- Read shoulder taper length.
- Confirm devices per MUTCD section.
- Post real speeds, not wishes.
Formula
- S
- Posted speed in mph.
- W
- Lateral shift width in feet.
S is posted speed in mph, W is lateral shift width in feet. Boundary convention uses the higher-speed form past 40. Shoulder tapers run one third of merging length by standard.
Worked example
Example: 45 mph, 12 ft shift
45 mph lane shift of 12 feet.
- Speed is 45 mph, lane shifts 12 ft.
- Over 40 mph uses L = W x S.
- Taper: 12 x 45 = 540 ft.
- Shoulder taper is a third: 540 / 3 = 180 ft.
- Confirm devices against the MUTCD section.
Reference table
| Speed | Formula | Taper |
|---|---|---|
| 25 mph | WS sq/60 | 125 ft |
| 35 mph | WS sq/60 | 245 ft |
| 45 mph | WS | 540 ft |
| 55 mph | WS | 660 ft |
| 65 mph | WS | 780 ft |
Limits
- Length math only. Devices and enforcement separate.
- Boundary convention past 40 uses WS form.
- Conditions stretch past minimums.
- Plans need the full MUTCD section.
Common mistakes
- Timing for wishes instead of driven speeds.
- Mixing taper types and lengths.
- Forgetting shoulder tapers differ.
- Skipping device and visibility plans.
- Posting minimums in bad conditions.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
Taper for 35 mph, 10 ft shift?
At 40 and under: L = 10 x 35 x 35 / 60 = 204 ft. Shoulder is 204 / 3 = 68 ft.
Taper for 55 mph, 12 ft shift?
Over 45: L = 12 x 55 = 660 ft. Shoulder is 660 / 3 = 220 ft.
Questions
What is the taper formula?
Merging taper length from speed and shift width: W times S squared over 60 at 40 mph and under, W times S above 45. Shifting tapers run half; shoulders a third.
What taper types exist?
Merging (lane drops), shifting (lateral jog), shoulder (work off road), plus downstream tapers that reopen lanes. Lengths differ by type; this page does merging with shoulder shown.
What about 40 to 45 mph?
Between 40 and 45 mph the book splits formulas; most plans use the higher-speed form there. Post the limit drivers actually run, not the wishful one.
Do devices change the length?
Devices, arrow boards, flaggers, and police sit outside length math. Length sets geometry; devices, visibility, and enforcement sell it to drivers.
Do curves and night change it?
Yes: night, rain, curves, and grades stretch needs past book minimums. Minimums start discussions; conditions close them.
What is the MUTCD?
The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, federal standard for signs, signals, and markings with work-zone sections. States adopt it with supplements.
