What it does

Swing sets need fall space beyond the legs. Kids jump, swings arc, and slides exit fast, so the safe zone runs well past the frame.

The tool above adds 6 ft per side. A 12 by 10 ft set needs 24 by 22 ft, or 528 ft2, edged by 12 timbers. The metric match is 3.7 by 3 m toward 7.36 by 6.66 m and 49 m2.

Six feet is the base rule from play guidance. Swing bays may need deeper front and back reach per the manual, and slides need a clear exit run.

The zone must sit level and drained. Slopes tip the frame, low spots pond under mulch, and fences inside the line turn falls into strikes.

Borders hold the surface in. Timbers or edging ring the zone so mulch stays deep where falls land.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial (ft) or metric (m).
  2. Enter set footprint length and width.
  3. Read safe zone first.
  4. Read area next.
  5. Read timber count.
  6. Mark the zone with paint before digging.

Formula

Zone = set + 12 ft each way (3.66 m). Area = zone L x zone W.
L
Set footprint length.
W
Set footprint width.

Metric adds 3.66 m total per side pair, the same 6 ft per side. Timbers are 8 ft imperial and 2.4 m metric.

Worked example

Example: 12 by 10 ft set

Imperial defaults: 12 by 10 ft set. These are also the default values, so the page opens on this answer.

  1. Set: 12 by 10 ft.
  2. Zone: 12 + 12 = 24 ft long, 10 + 12 = 22 ft wide.
  3. Area: 24 x 22 = 528 ft2.
  4. Border: 2 x (24 + 22) = 92 ft, or ceil(92 / 8) = 12 timbers.
  5. Tool shows 24 ft by 22 ft, 528 ft2, 12 timbers (8 ft).

Limits

  • Space math only. Anchors and surfacing need manuals.
  • Swing reach may need more than 6 ft.
  • Slopes and lines can veto a flat zone.
  • Depths need surfacing guidance.

Common mistakes

  • Fitting the frame, not the fall zone.
  • Parking swings near fences.
  • Leveling never, then rocking the frame.
  • Skipping anchors in wind.
  • Edging with stakes at fall height.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

8 by 6 ft set?

Zone is 8 + 12 = 20 ft by 6 + 12 = 18 ft. Area is 20 x 18 = 360 ft2. Border is 2 x 38 = 76 ft, or ceil(76 / 8) = 10 timbers.

4 by 3 m set: zone and area?

Zone is 4 + 3.66 = 7.66 m by 3 + 3.66 = 6.66 m. Area is 7.66 x 6.66 = 51 m2.

Questions

How much space?

Add 12 ft to each side dimension. A 12 by 10 ft set needs 24 by 22 ft, or 528 ft2.

Why add 12 ft?

Six feet clear on all sides per play guidance. Swings need more in front and back when the manual says so.

How many border timbers?

Divide border feet by timber length. Here 92 / 8 = 11.5, so 12 timbers.

How deep a surface?

Nine inches of mulch or chips in the zone per guidance. This page sizes space; surfacing needs its own depth math.

Where should the zone sit?

Check fences, slopes, and overhead lines. Zones must sit clear, level, and drained.

Does this approve the set?

No. Anchoring, hardware, and surfacing still need the manual.
