What it does

Student loan interest deducts up to $2,500 above the line, then phases out across a $15,000 single or $30,000 joint window that moves by year. High earners keep part, then nothing.

The tool above takes interest paid, MAGI, status, and year. It returns the allowed deduction with the phased out slice and the band label.

The default 2025 single filer at $92,500 MAGI with $2,800 paid sits halfway through phaseout and keeps $1,250. A 2025 joint couple at $185,000 with $2,000 paid keeps $1,000.

Math follows IRS Topic 456 with Publication 970 Chapter 4 behind it. Both pin the $2,500 cap and the yearly phaseout bands used here.

How to use

  1. Enter interest paid in the year.
  2. Enter MAGI.
  3. Pick single or joint status.
  4. Pick the tax year.
  5. Read the deduction first.
  6. Read the phased out slice beside it.

Formula

Allowed = min(2500, paid) x (1 - (MAGI - lower) / span). Span 15,000 single, 30,000 joint.
paid
Interest actually paid that year.
lower
Phaseout floor by year and status.
span
15,000 single, 30,000 joint.
full
Lesser of 2,500 or paid.

Full amount survives at or below the lower limit and dies at or above the upper one. Worksheets round to dollars. Filing separately or being claimed as a dependent zeroes the claim regardless of income.

Worked example

Example: mid phaseout single filer

Defaults: 2025 single, $2,800 interest paid, $92,500 MAGI.

  1. Full amount: min(2,500, 2,800) = $2,500.
  2. Lower limit 2025 single: $85,000.
  3. Excess: 92,500 - 85,000 = $7,500.
  4. Fraction: 7,500 / 15,000 = 0.5.
  5. Reduction: 2,500 x 0.5 = $1,250.
  6. Allowed: 2,500 - 1,250 = $1,250.
  7. Tool shows $1,250.00, $1,250.00 phased out, partially phased out.
