Steps to Distance Calculator
Kilometers and miles from step count and height, plus walking time.
What it does
Step length scales with leg length, which scales with height. Gait studies put average stride near 41% of stature, so a 175 cm adult steps about 72 cm per stride and ten thousand of them span a little over seven kilometers.
The tool above multiplies your steps by height based stride. It returns kilometers, miles, and walking time at a brisk hundred steps a minute.
Speed stretches stride. Strolling shortens it well below the average while purposeful walking lengthens it, which is why the same step count covers different ground by mood.
Wrist counters add their own error by missing or inventing steps. Treat daily totals as directionally right and measure important routes with GPS or a known track.
How to use
- Switch the unit system first: metric for cm, imperial for inches.
- Enter height without shoes.
- Enter the step count from the counter.
- Read distance in both units plus the time estimate.
Formula
- 0.414
- Average stride share of height from gait studies.
- / 100,000
- Centimeters to kilometers.
- / 100
- Steps to minutes at brisk pace.
Running strides run longer per height than walking ones, so this page fits walkers. Runners should measure a known distance instead.
Worked example
Example: 10,000 steps at 175 cm
Daily goal steps with average adult height.
- Stride: 175 x 0.414 = 72.45 cm.
- Distance: 10,000 x 72.45 / 100,000 = 7.245 km, shown as 7.25.
- Miles: 7.245 / 1.609344 = 4.5 mi.
- Time: 10,000 / 100 = 100 min at brisk pace.
Reference table
| Height | Stride | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 160 cm | 66.2 cm | 6.62 km (4.12 mi) |
| 170 cm | 70.4 cm | 7.04 km (4.37 mi) |
| 175 cm | 72.5 cm | 7.25 km (4.5 mi) |
| 180 cm | 74.5 cm | 7.45 km (4.63 mi) |
| 190 cm | 78.7 cm | 7.87 km (4.89 mi) |
Limits
- Average stride assumed. Individuals vary plenty.
- Walking only. Running strides differ.
- Counters miscount by several percent daily.
- Hills and surfaces change real distance.
Common mistakes
- Using one stride for stroll and power walk alike.
- Trusting wrist counts as survey grade.
- Forgetting height changes the same step count.
- Reading treadmill steps as road distance.
- Chasing round step goals instead of minutes.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
8000 steps at 180 cm?
Stride 74.52 cm. Then 8000 x 74.52 / 100,000 = 5.96 km.
Minutes for those 8000 steps?
8000 / 100 = 80 min brisk.
Questions
How far is 10,000 steps?
Seven to eight km for most adults: 7.25 km at 175 cm height.
Where did 10,000 come from?
A 1960s Japanese marketing name. Seven to eight thousand already buys most health gains.
How do I measure my stride?
Walk ten normal steps, measure the distance, divide by ten.
Do short people walk less per step?
Yes per stride, though cadence often runs higher to compensate.
Steps or minutes: which goal?
Minutes of brisk walking track effort better. Steps gamify nicely.
Why does my phone disagree with my watch?
Different sensors and algorithms. Both approximate within several percent.
