What it does

Spouses can draw on each other's records. At full age the lower earner collects half the higher PIA without touching it.

The tool above halves the input. A $2,000 PIA pays $1,000.00 monthly spousal or $12,000.00 yearly, with $2,000.00 survivor coverage.

Full age matters most. Sixty seven for most workers now, with early claims shrinking checks for life.

Survivors draw fuller shares. One hundred percent of the higher PIA passes to qualifying survivors.

Earnings and pensions shift real checks. Tests and offsets need SSA review before counting.

How to use

  1. Enter spouse monthly PIA.
  2. Read spousal monthly first.
  3. Read yearly next.
  4. Read survivor amount.
  5. Claim timing with SSA guidance.

Formula

Spousal = spouse PIA x 0.50 at full age. Survivor = spouse PIA x 1.00.
PIA
Higher earner primary insurance amount.

Full age benefits only; early claiming reduces checks. Survivor uses 100 % of the higher PIA.

Worked example

Example: $2,000 PIA

Defaults: $2,000 spouse PIA. These are also the default values, so the page opens on this answer.

  1. Spouse PIA: $2,000 monthly.
  2. Full spousal: 2000 x 0.50 = $1,000.00 per month.
  3. Yearly: 1000 x 12 = $12,000.00.
  4. Survivor: 100 % of PIA, so $2,000.00.
  5. Tool shows $1,000.00 per month, $12,000.00 per year, $2,000.00 survivor per month.
