What it does

Sleep efficiency divides asleep time by bed time. Eight hours in bed with seven asleep gives 87.5%, while the same seven asleep across nine in bed falls to 77.8%. The gap is fragmentation, not duration, which is why long restless nights score poorly.

The tool above runs the share. Defaults of 420 asleep over 480 in bed give 87.5 % efficient with 60 min awake and Good efficiency. A 420 bed with 300 asleep gives 71.4 % with 120 awake and Poor. A strong 540 bed with 500 asleep gives 92.6 % Good.

Habits move the number both ways. Fixed wake times, daylight mornings, and late caffeine curfews usually lift it, while screens in bed and long weekend lie ins drag it down. Trackers estimate asleep time from movement, so diaries cross check the math.

This page reports habit information only. It does not diagnose insomnia, apnea, or restless legs. Loud snoring, gasping, or daytime sleepiness needs clinical review.

How to use

  1. Enter minutes in bed.
  2. Enter minutes asleep.
  3. Read efficiency first.
  4. Read awake minutes.
  5. Read the verdict band.
  6. Average a week before changing habits.

Formula

eff_pct = asleep_min / bed_min x 100. awake = bed - asleep. Bands: 85+ good, 75-84 fair, below 75 poor.
bed
Total minutes from bedtime to rise time.
asleep
Minutes actually asleep inside that window.
awake
Minutes awake in bed.

Night sleep diary or tracker minutes. At zero bed minutes there is no share. Shift work and fragmented schedules need multi night averages, not one night.

Worked example

Example: 420 asleep of 480 in bed

Defaults: 480 min (8 h) in bed with 420 asleep. Trackers and diaries both work.

  1. Inputs: 480 min in bed with 420 asleep.
  2. Share: 420 / 480 times 100 is 87.5 % efficient.
  3. Awake: 480 minus 420 is 60 min awake.
  4. Band: 87.5 meets 85, so Good efficiency.
  5. A 420 bed with 300 asleep gives 71.4 % Poor. Tool shows the same.

Limits

  • Information only. No disorder diagnosis.
  • One night noisy. Average a week.
  • Tracker estimates. Diaries differ.
  • Naps and shifts excluded unless added.

Common mistakes

  • Counting couch time as bed time.
  • Logging guessed asleep minutes as exact.
  • Judging one bad night.
  • Chasing 100% instead of 85 plus.
  • Adding naps to one side only.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

300 asleep of 420 in bed?

Share is 300 / 420 is 71.4 % efficient with 120 min awake. Poor efficiency.

500 asleep of 540 in bed?

Share is 500 / 540 is 92.6 % efficient with 40 min awake. Good efficiency.

Questions

How is efficiency figured?

Asleep / in bed times 100. Here 87.5 % efficient.

What counts as good?

85% and up good, 75 to 84 fair, below 75 poor. Here Good efficiency.

What are awake minutes?

In bed minus asleep. Here 60 min awake.

Do onset and waking both count?

Yes. Long sleep onset and night waking both cut it the same way.

Do naps count?

Naps sit outside night math unless added to both lines.

Does this diagnose insomnia?

No. This is habit information only, not a sleep disorder diagnosis.
