Sheep Water Intake Calculator
Sheep flock water per day and week by class and heat.
What it does
Sheep drink by class, not by flock average. Lactating ewes outdrink dry ewes three to one, and a hot week lifts every trough. Counting heads by stage sizes water right the first time.
The tool above sums class rates times head. Ten lactating ewes with a ram need 25.5 gal a day in normal weather, which is 178.5 gal a week at 2.32 gal per head. The metric match is 96.5 L a day with 675.7 L a week.
Rates run 0.2 gal for young lambs through 2.4 gal for milking ewes, with rams and pregnant ewes near 1.5 gal. Heat multiplies totals by 1.3 once temperatures pass about 80 F, since dry matter intake and panting both climb.
Place troughs near grazing and shade, scrub algae, and test odd tasting wells. Twins and triplets push ewes past book averages, so watch udders and lamb growth beside the math.
How to use
- Pick imperial (gal) or metric (L).
- Enter head per class.
- Pick normal or hot weather.
- Read daily total first.
- Read weekly total.
- Read per head average.
Formula
- head
- Head counts by class.
- rate
- Gallons per head per day for the class.
- heat
- 1.0 normal or 1.3 hot weather.
Per head rates follow extension tables: dry ewes 0.8, pregnant 1.5, lactating 2.4, rams 1.5, feeder lambs 1.25, and young lambs 0.2 gallons a day. Heat multiplies by 1.3 near 80 F and up. Liters convert at 3.78541 per gallon.
Worked example
Example: 10 ewes plus a ram
Imperial defaults: 10 lactating, 0 pregnant, 0 dry, 1 ram, 0 feeders, 0 lambs, normal heat. These are also the default values, so the page opens on this answer.
- Flock: 10 lactating ewes with 1 ram, normal weather.
- Base: 10 x 2.4 + 1 x 1.5 = 24.0 + 1.5 = 25.5 gal.
- Daily: 25.5 x 1.0 = 25.5 gal per day.
- Weekly: 25.5 x 7 = 178.5 gal per week.
- Per head: 25.5 / 11 = 2.32 gal.
- Tool shows 25.5 gal per day with 178.5 gal per week and 2.32 gal per head.
- Metric match: 96.5 L per day with 675.7 L per week.
Reference table
| Flock | Daily gal | Daily L |
|---|---|---|
| 5 pregnant | 7.5 | 28.4 |
| 10 lactating | 24 | 90.8 |
| 12 lambs | 2.4 | 9.1 |
Limits
- Estimate from extension tables.
- Breed and feed shift intake.
- Heat factor is a planning 1.3.
- Spills and leaks excluded.
Common mistakes
- One trough for a big mob.
- No extra water for twins.
- Sun baked troughs sheep avoid.
- Counting rain puddles as supply.
- Ignoring the lactation jump.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
5 pregnant ewes, normal?
7.5 gal per day with 52.5 gal per week and 1.5 gal per head.
10 lactating, 1 ram, 5 feeders, hot?
41.3 gal per day with 288.9 gal per week and 2.58 gal per head.
Questions
Daily water for the example?
Sum head times class rates. Here 10 x 2.4 + 1 x 1.5 = 25.5 gal per day.
Weekly water?
Multiply daily by 7. Here 25.5 x 7 = 178.5 gal per week.
Rates by class?
Lactating 2.4, pregnant 1.5, dry 0.8, rams 1.5, feeders 1.25, and lambs 0.2 gal a day.
Heat factor?
Hot weather multiplies by 1.3 in this tool.
Exact for every flock?
No. Trough size, distance, and water quality change real drinking.
Liters version?
Yes: the same flock gives 96.5 L per day with 675.7 L per week.
