What it does

Rugby totals mix running and kicking values that newcomers confuse. Four tries with three conversions and two penalties give 20 plus 6 plus 6 for 32 points, with kicking nearly forty percent.

The tool above takes tries, conversions, penalties, and drop goals. It returns team points, scoring play count, and kicking points, so recap lines check before arguments start.

This math fits senior fifteens scoring. It does not fit sevens with shorter halves, age grade variations, or bonus point tables that add standings extras.

World laws frame the same values under scoring rules, with national guides teaching the game from first touch through conversions. Five for a try with two for the kick is the anchor pair.

Count conversions against tries first. Three conversions on four tries is valid, while five on four is not.

How to use

  1. Enter tries grounded in goal.
  2. Enter conversions kicked after tries.
  3. Enter penalty goals and drop goals.
  4. Read team score first for the headline.
  5. Read kicking points for the boot share.
  6. Read plays to sense game flow.

Formula

Score = tries x 5 + conversions x 2 + penalties x 3 + drops x 3.
tries
Five point grounded scores.
conversions
Two point kicks after tries.
penalties/drops
Three point kicks each.

Conversions cannot top tries. Sevens and age grade variants use different values outside this page.

Worked example

Example: 4 tries, 3 conversions, 2 penalties

Tries 4, conversions 3, penalties 2, drops 0.

  1. Tries: 4 x 5 = 20 pts.
  2. Conversions: 3 x 2 = 6 pts.
  3. Penalties: 2 x 3 = 6 pts.
  4. Total: 20 + 6 + 6 = 32 pts.
  5. Tool shows 32 pts, 9 plays, 12 pts kicking.

Questions

How is rugby scored?

Tries 5, conversions 2, penalties and drop goals 3 each. Add all four lines.

Can conversions top tries?

No. Each conversion follows a try, so conversions stay at or below tries.

What share comes from kicking?

Conversions plus penalties plus drops. 3, 2, and 0 here give 12 of 32.

Is sevens scoring different?

Values match but halves shorten. This page fits fifteens regulation.

Do bonus points count?

Not in match score. Tables add try and loss bonuses separately.

What is a drop goal worth?

Three points, same as a penalty, kicked in open play.
