What it does

Roof runoff feeds gardens well but carries bird and material contaminants, so stored barrels need measured disinfection before use. Plain unscented bleach at drops per gallon does the job when the dose matches strength and clarity.

The tool above takes barrel volume with bleach strength and clarity. It returns the teaspoon and ounce dose with wait rules.

The default 55 gallons clear at 6% needs 6.9 tsp (1.1 fl oz), matching the 1 oz garden rule. The metric mirror of 208 liters reads 33.9 mL.

Dosing follows CDC emergency tables with EPA disinfection charts and Rutgers barrel guidance behind them. All three agree on 8 drops per gallon at 6% used here.

How to use

  1. Pick gallons or liters.
  2. Enter the barrel volume.
  3. Pick the bleach strength.
  4. Flag clear or cloudy water.
  5. Read the dose first.
  6. Follow the wait line.

Formula

Drops = gallons x 8 (6%) or x 6 (8.25%), doubled if cloudy. Tsp = drops / 64. Oz = tsp / 6.

Cloudy water doubles the dose.

Liters convert to gallons first (divide by 3.78541), then the same drop math runs. Metric displays milliliters (tsp x 4.92892). Round up to ensure dose, never down; boiling beats bleach for pathogens but not chemicals.

Worked example

Example: 55 gallon barrel

Imperial defaults: 55 gallons, 6% bleach, clear water.

  1. Barrel: 55 gallons, clear water, 6% bleach.
  2. Rate: 8 drops per gallon.
  3. Total: 55 x 8 = 440 drops.
  4. Teaspoons: 440 / 64 = 6.9 tsp.
  5. Ounces: 6.9 / 6 = 1.1 fl oz.
  6. Matches the 1 oz per barrel garden rule.
  7. Tool shows 6.9 tsp bleach, 1.1 fl oz, wait rules.

Limits

  • Germs only; chemicals stay.
  • Bleach under a year old with % label.
  • First flush diverters beat dosing.
  • Edibles need soil-only watering.

Common mistakes

  • Using scented or color safe bleach.
  • Rounding doses down.
  • Drinking before 30 minutes.
  • Spraying leaves with barrel water.
  • Skipping the cloudy double.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

5 gallons clear at 6%?

40 drops = 0.6 tsp (0.1 fl oz).

55 gallons cloudy at 6%?

880 drops = 13.8 tsp (2.3 oz), doubled.

55 gallons clear at 8.25%?

55 x 6 = 330 drops = 5.2 tsp (0.9 oz).

Questions

How much bleach per gallon?

8 drops per gallon at 6%, 6 drops at 8.25%. Double when cloudy, murky, or very cold.

Which bleach is safe?

Regular unscented sodium hypochlorite only. No scents, no color safe, under a year old.

How long must it stand?

At least 30 minutes before drinking with a slight chlorine odor. Garden use waits about 24 hours.

Does garden water need bleach too?

Yes, about 1 oz per 55 gallons monthly (twice in rainy spells), soil only, mornings only.

Can I water vegetables with it?

Use drip or cans to soil, never leaves, and only for non-edible contact parts.

Does bleach clean chemicals?

No. Bleach kills germs but never removes fuel, chemicals, or heavy metals from roof runoff.
