What it does

Push up volume is the simplest training number to plan: sets times reps times days. Four sets of 15 three days a week is 60 a session, 180 a week, and about 720 a month.

The tool above takes sets, reps per set, and days per week. It returns session, weekly, and monthly totals, so adding one set or one day shows its full month cost at once.

This math counts repetitions only. It does not judge form, range of motion, tempo, or rest, which decide how much each rep trains.

Activity guidance frames the same base: work major muscle groups at least twice weekly with rest between, while outdoor fitness guides use body weight moves like push ups, dips, and planks in sets of 15 building to 3 sets.

Add volume slowly. Jumping from 90 to 300 weekly push ups overnight trains soreness more than strength.

How to use

  1. Enter sets per session.
  2. Enter reps per set with good form.
  3. Enter training days per week.
  4. Read per session first for the workout card.
  5. Read weekly for the training log.
  6. Read monthly for the program block.

Formula

Session = sets x reps. Weekly = session x days. Monthly = weekly x 4.
sets
Work sets per session.
reps
Push ups per set.
days
Training days each week.

Monthly uses 4 weeks as a program block. Failed reps do not count toward totals. Rest at least a day between hard strength days for the same muscles.

Worked example

Example: 4 sets of 15, 3 days a week

Sets 4, reps 15, days 3.

  1. Session: 4 x 15 = 60 push ups.
  2. Weekly: 60 x 3 = 180 push ups.
  3. Monthly: 180 x 4 = 720 push ups.
  4. Tool shows 60 push ups, 180 push ups, 720 push ups.
  5. Add-on: a fourth day lifts weekly to 240 push ups.

Limits

  • Counts only. Form and tempo decide training value.
  • Monthly uses 4 week blocks, not calendar months.
  • Ignores warm up, rest, and accessory work.
  • Pain and fatigue need rest beyond any total.

Common mistakes

  • Counting half reps toward the total.
  • Adding days without rest for the same muscles.
  • Raising sets and reps in the same week.
  • Comparing monthly across different block lengths.
  • Chasing totals through shoulder pain.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

3 sets of 10, 5 days a week?

30 push ups a session, 150 a week, 600 a month.

5 sets of 20, 4 days a week?

100 push ups a session, 400 a week, 1,600 a month.

2 sets of 25, 2 days a week?

50 push ups a session, 100 a week, 400 a month.

Questions

How many push ups do I do a week?

Sets times reps times days. 4x15 three days is 180 a week.

What is a good session total?

One you repeat with form. 30 to 60 guards quality for most starters.

How do I progress safely?

Add one set or a few reps weekly, not both, with rest days kept.

Do push ups train the whole body?

Mainly chest, shoulders, triceps, and core. Add squats and rows for balance.

Why 4 weeks for monthly?

Training blocks use 4 weeks for clean comparison across programs.

Should I train through pain?

No. Sharp or joint pain means stop and rest, then resume lighter.
