What it does

The PSAT matters for exactly one high stakes list: National Merit. NMSC ranks juniors not by total score but by the Selection Index, which doubles Reading and Writing before adding Math. Two students with the same 1420 can sit two index points apart on opposite sides of a state cutoff.

The tool above computes the index and total from section scores. Enter Reading and Writing plus Math in steps of 10. It returns the 48 to 228 index with a compare note. Defaults of 720 and 700 open solved at 214 with 1420.

Double weighting rewards verbal strength sharply. Flipping the sections to 700 and 720 drops the index to 212 at the same total, and a perfect 760 Math with 660 verbal lands 208, below every Semifinalist line. Study hours follow the math: Reading and Writing buys double.

Cutoffs move by state and year because NMSC fills state allocations top down. Recent Semifinalist lines span roughly 207 to 223, with Commended near 208 to 210 nationally. Your index means nothing until set against the current guide for the state.

Use the table to feel the weighting, then run the scores. Semifinalists still need the application, essay, grades, and a confirming SAT or ACT to advance.

How to use

  1. Enter Reading and Writing in steps of 10.
  2. Enter Math in steps of 10.
  3. Read the index first, then the total.
  4. Compare with the state cutoff.
  5. Push Reading and Writing first for index gains.
  6. Confirm with SAT or ACT later for Finalist standing.

Formula

Index = (2 x RW + Math) / 10. Total = RW + Math.
RW
Reading and Writing section, 160 to 760.
Math
Math section, 160 to 760.
Index
48 to 228, the scholarship ranking number.

RW is the Reading and Writing section score and Math the Math section score, each 160 to 760 in steps of 10. The index always lands whole because doubled tens plus tens divide evenly by 10. National Merit uses the index, not the total, to rank within each state.

Worked example

Example: 720 and 700 give 214

Reading and Writing 720 with Math 700. Find the Selection Index and total.

  1. Double Reading and Writing: 2 x 720 = 1440.
  2. Add Math: 1440 + 700 = 2140.
  3. Divide by 10: 2140 / 10 = 214.
  4. Total score: 720 + 700 = 1420.
  5. Compare 214 with the state cutoff for the year.
  6. Verbal strength lifts the index: flipped 700/720 gives only 212.

Limits

  • Section scores only; raw to scaled equating stays with College Board.
  • Cutoffs change yearly by state.
  • Junior year entry rules apply.
  • Index screens; application decides.

Common mistakes

  • Ranking by total instead of index.
  • Studying Math only for Merit.
  • Using last year cutoff as promise.
  • Missing confirming SAT or ACT.
  • Skipping entry requirement checks.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

Perfect 760 and 760?

(2 x 760 + 760) / 10 = 2280 / 10 = 228, total 1520. The ceiling on both boards.

700 Reading and Writing with 720 Math?

(2 x 700 + 720) / 10 = 2120 / 10 = 212, total 1420. Two points under the flipped split.

Score of 723?

Whole steps of 10 only; 723 has no official meaning. Round to the reported score.

Questions

What is the formula?

Reading and Writing counts twice, Math once: (2 x RW + Math) / 10. Range 48 to 228.

Why does verbal count twice?

Verbal skill weighs double for National Merit purposes. A 760 Math cannot rescue a soft Reading and Writing score.

What clears Semifinalist?

By state and year, recently about 207 to 223 for Semifinalists with Commended near 208 to 210. Check the current guide.

How many win anything?

About 50,000 of 1.3 million entrants earn recognition; some 16,000 become Semifinalists and 7,500 Scholars.

What are the section ranges?

Both sections run 160 to 760 in steps of 10, so totals run 320 to 1520. Adaptive equating maps raw correct to scaled.

Do colleges see it?

No. Colleges never see PSAT scores. It screens scholarships and previews SAT readiness only.
