Pond Stocking Calculator
Pond fish counts per acre with 10 to 1 balance and seasonal schedule.
What it does
Balanced ponds stock prey before predators: bream go in fall to spawn, bass follow in spring to eat the fry, and the 10 to 1 ratio keeps both sides fed. Early bass or wild transplants wreck the plan.
The tool above takes acres with the combo and fertility. It returns predator and forage counts with the seasonal schedule.
The default 2.5 acres unfertilized takes 125 bass with 875 bluegill plus 375 redear. A single acre of bass plus bluegill takes 50 with 500; fertilized water doubles both.
Rates follow Mississippi State extension with Texas A and M AgriLife and UGA extension behind them. All three agree on 50 plus 500 per acre and fall then spring timing used here.
How to use
- Enter pond acres at full pool.
- Pick the species combo.
- Flag fertilized or fed water.
- Read predators first, forage beside.
- Stock forage in fall or winter.
- Add bass next spring.
Formula
- acres
- Surface acres at full pool.
- 50 bass
- Bass fingerlings per acre.
- 500 bream
- Bream fingerlings per acre.
- x2
- Fertilized or fed ponds double.
Fish round to whole animals and acres use full pool size, not low water marks. Sizes run bream 1 to 2 in, bass about 4 in, catfish 4 to 6 in new ponds. Harvest waits a year or more per the schedules.
Worked example
Example: 2.5 acre pond
Defaults: 2.5 acres, bass plus bream mix, unfertilized.
- Pond: 2.5 acres, unfertilized, bream mix combo.
- Bass: 50 x 2.5 = 125.
- Bluegill: 350 x 2.5 = 875.
- Redear: 150 x 2.5 = 375.
- Ratio check: 1,250 bream / 125 bass = 10 to 1.
- Fall: forage plus catfish. Spring: bass at spawn.
- Tool shows 125 largemouth bass, 875 bluegill, 375 redear.
Reference table
| Species | Rate | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Largemouth bass | 50 | Next spring |
| Bluegill | 500 or 350 | Fall |
| Redear | 150 with mix | Fall |
| Channel catfish | 50 optional | Fall |
| Grass carp | 5 | Fall |
| Fathead minnows | 3 lb | Fall |
Limits
- Ponds 1 acre plus for bass mixes.
- Fertilized doubling needs aeration care.
- Crappie overpopulate small ponds.
- Disease testing sits outside counts.
Common mistakes
- Stocking bass with bream in spring.
- Moving wild fish with disease.
- Adding crappie to small ponds.
- Harvesting in year one.
- Sizing by low water acres.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
1 acre bass plus bluegill?
50 bass with 500 bluegill, fall then spring.
1 acre fertilized?
Fertilized doubles: 100 bass with 1,000 bluegill.
2 acres catfish only?
125 x 2 = 250 channel catfish, feed-based, no bass.
Questions
What is the standard stocking rate?
50 bass plus 500 bream per acre (350 bluegill plus 150 redear), unfertilized. Fertilized ponds double.
What ratio holds balance?
Ten bream per bass. Extra early bass eat forage before it spawns and stunt the pond.
When is each species stocked?
Fall or winter for bream and catfish; next spring for bass when bream spawn.
Do I add catfish or carp?
Up to 50 per acre optional, plus 5 triploid grass carp and 3 lb minnows per acre.
What about ponds under an acre?
Yes: catfish only at 100 to 150 per acre, feed-based. Bass plus bream rarely balances under an acre.
Can I move wild fish in?
No. Wild fish bring wrong species and disease; buy fingerlings from a hatchery.
