Plywood Weight Calculator
Plywood stack weight in lb or kg by material.
What it does
Sheet goods sell by the sheet but haul by weight. Volume per sheet times material density gives per sheet pounds, and count scales it to the stack. This page runs that chain in pounds or kilograms for three common stocks.
The default is four 3/4 in softwood sheets. Each holds 2 ft3 at 34 lb per ft3, so 68 lb per sheet and 272 lb total. Metric defaults convert the same stack to 19 mm sheets at 30.8 kg each for 123.2 kg total.
Material choice moves the answer most. Hardwood faces and MDF cores run denser than softwood veneer, and wet sheets stored outdoors add water weight above the shop base used here. Weigh one sheet when the load nears a limit.
Thickness inputs are nominal sheet labels. A 23/32 in subfloor sheet enters as 0.72 in, and an 18 mm import sheet enters as 18, since small thickness gaps scale straight into weight.
How to use
- Pick imperial or metric first.
- Enter sheet count.
- Enter thickness.
- Pick the material closest to stock.
- Read total first, then per sheet.
Formula
- sheets
- Count of 4x8 sheets (2.44x1.22 m).
- thickness
- Sheet thickness in the active units.
- density
- Material pounds per ft3 at shop moisture.
Densities are air dry averages: softwood 34, hardwood 45, MDF 50 lb per ft3 (metric converted at 16.0185 kg per m3 per lb per ft3). Real sheets vary with species, glue, and moisture, so treat totals as hauling weights with a margin near truck or rack limits.
Worked example
Example: four 3/4 sheets
4 sheets, 0.75 in softwood (metric 19 mm).
- Sheet volume: 4 x 8 x 0.75 / 12 = 2 ft3.
- Per sheet: 2 x 34 = 68 lb.
- Total: 68 x 4 = 272 lb.
- Metric: 2.44 x 1.22 x 19/1000 = 0.0566 m3.
- Metric per sheet 30.8 kg, total 123.2 kg.
- Tool shows 272 lb imperial and 123.2 kg metric.
Reference table
| Material | Per sheet | 4 sheets |
|---|---|---|
| Softwood | 68 lb | 272 lb |
| Hardwood | 90 lb | 360 lb |
| MDF | 100 lb | 400 lb |
| 1/2 in softwood | 45 lb | 180 lb |
| 1/4 in softwood | 23 lb | 92 lb |
Limits
- 4x8 sheets only. Cut or odd sizes need scaling.
- Averages per material. Real sheets vary.
- Shop moisture base. Wet stock weighs more.
- Sheets only. No framing or fasteners.
Common mistakes
- Using nominal thickness as exact without checking.
- Picking softwood density for MDF.
- Forgetting count multiplies everything.
- Reading per sheet as the stack total.
- Hauling to the truck limit with no margin.
Try it yourself
Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.
2 sheets of 3/4 softwood?
136 lb (2 x 68).
2 sheets of 3/4 hardwood?
90 lb per sheet (2 x 45), 180 lb for 2.
Questions
How heavy is the stack?
Sheet volume times density times count. Here 4 sheets of 3/4 softwood weigh 272 lb.
How heavy is one sheet?
68 lb here (2 ft3 at 34 lb per ft3).
What is that in metric?
123.2 kg total, 30.8 kg per sheet.
What densities are used?
34 for softwood, 45 for hardwood, 50 for MDF per ft3.
Does grade change weight?
Yes. Baltic and marine sheets run heavier than plain softwood.
Does it include hardware?
No. Fasteners, glue, and finish sit outside sheet math.
