What it does

Ovulation releases the egg about fourteen days before the next period starts, and counting backwards from the cycle length finds it. Sperm survive up to five days inside, so fertility opens five days before ovulation and closes on the day itself.

The tool above takes the last period start and usual cycle length. It returns the ovulation day, the six day fertile window, and the next expected period.

Regularity decides trust. Steady cycles predict within a day or two, while irregular ones swing widely and need ovulation tests or temperature tracking instead of calendar math.

Stress, illness, travel, and coming off hormonal birth control all shift ovulation later. A late period with negative tests usually means late ovulation, not a broken calculator.

How to use

  1. Enter the first day of the last period, not spotting.
  2. Enter the usual cycle length in days.
  3. Plan around the full fertile window, not just ovulation day.
  4. Confirm with ovulation predictor kits when timing matters.

Formula

Ovulation = LMP + (cycle - 14) days. Fertile start = ovulation - 5 days. Next period = LMP + cycle days.
cycle - 14
Days from period start to ovulation. The 14 day luteal phase runs steady.
minus 5
Sperm survival opening the window before ovulation.
+ cycle
Next period start from the last one.

The back half of the cycle holds near fourteen days across women, while the front half varies. That is why counting back from the next period beats counting forward from the last one.

Worked example

Example: LMP 1 Jan 2026, 28 day cycle

Last period 1 January 2026, regular 28 day cycles.

  1. Ovulation: 1 Jan + (28 - 14) = 1 Jan + 14 days = Thu Jan 15 2026.
  2. Fertile start: 15 Jan - 5 days = Sat Jan 10 2026.
  3. Window: Sat Jan 10 2026 to Thu Jan 15 2026.
  4. Next period: 1 Jan + 28 days = Thu Jan 29 2026.

Limits

  • Regular cycles assumed. Irregular ones need test kits.
  • Predicts the pattern, not this month guarantee.
  • Illness and stress shift ovulation later.
  • Contraception, nursing, and perimenopause break the pattern.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming day 14 for every cycle length.
  • Counting spotting as day one.
  • Aiming only at ovulation day instead of the window.
  • Trusting apps after a disrupted month.
  • Using calendar method alone for avoiding pregnancy.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

LMP 1 Mar 2026, 30 day cycle. Ovulation?

1 Mar + 16 days = 17 March 2026.

Fertile window for the same dates?

17 Mar minus 5 days = 12 March to 17 March.

Questions

How long is the fertile window?

Six days: ovulation day plus the five before it, from sperm survival.

Can I ovulate without a period?

Yes, bleeding and ovulation can separate, mainly around nursing and perimenopause.

Do ovulation kits beat calendars?

For the current month, yes. They detect the LH surge a day or two before ovulation.

Does the window shift with long cycles?

Yes, later. A 32 day cycle ovulates near day 18, not day 14.

Can stress delay ovulation?

Yes. The front half stretches while the back fourteen days hold, pushing everything later.

Is calendar tracking birth control?

No, it fails often alone. Fertility awareness as contraception needs training and backup rules.
