What it does

Overseeding thickens lawns by weight, not wishes. Tall fescue overseeds near 5 lb per 1,000 sq ft, so a 5,000 sq ft lawn needs 25 lb; rye drinks 7 per 1,000 while bluegrass sips 2.5. Rate times area sets the buy.

The tool above runs three grasses with bag and cost math. Enter area, pick fescue, rye, or bluegrass, add bag size and price, and it prints seed pounds, bag count, and cost. Defaults show fescue at 25 lb in one $80 bag.

Extension calendars back the rates. NC State overseeds thin fescue at 6 lb per 1,000, Cornell ranges rye at 4-6 and bluegrass at 1-3 for new seeding, and Clemson overseeds established lawns with 5 lb of rye. Calculator defaults sit inside every range.

Fall timing beats spring seed. Cool air with warm soil and autumn rain germinates cool-season grasses while summer weeds fade. Mow low, aerate, seed into soil contact, and water lightly daily for two to three weeks.

How to use

  1. Enter the lawn area.
  2. Pick the grass type for its rate.
  3. Enter the bag size in lb.
  4. Enter the bag price.
  5. Read seed pounds first, then bags.
  6. Read the cost and sow in fall.

Formula

Seed lb = sq ft / 1000 x rate (fescue 5, rye 7, bluegrass 2.5). Bags = ceil(seed / bag). Cost = bags x price.
sq ft
Lawn area in sq ft.
rate
Lb per 1,000 sq ft by grass.

Rates sit inside NC State (fescue 6 bare), Cornell (rye 4-6, bluegrass 1-3), and Clemson (rye 5 established) ranges.

Worked example

Example: 5,000 sq ft fescue

Defaults: 5,000 sq ft fescue, 50-lb bags at $80.

  1. Inputs: 5,000 sq ft, tall fescue at 5 lb/1000.
  2. Seed: 5,000 / 1,000 x 5 = 25 lb.
  3. Bags: ceil(25 / 50) = 1 fifty-lb bag.
  4. Cost: 1 x $80 = $80.00.
  5. Tool shows 25 lb seed, 1 bag (50 lb), $80.00.

Limits

  • Planning rates only. Bare spots need more.
  • Ignores seed viability and coatings.
  • Bags assumed uniform size and price.
  • Weed and pH prep sit outside.

Common mistakes

  • Seeding at new-lawn rates over old turf.
  • Spring seeding into crabgrass season.
  • Skipping aeration before seed.
  • Underwatering the first 3 weeks.
  • Buying without measuring the lawn.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

2,000 sq ft bluegrass, 50-lb bag at $25?

2,000 / 1,000 x 2.5 = 5 lb. Bags ceil(5/50) = 1. Cost 1 x $25 = $25.00.

10,000 sq ft rye, 50-lb bags at $60?

10,000 / 1,000 x 7 = 70 lb. Bags ceil(70/50) = 2. Cost 2 x $60 = $120.00.

Questions

How much seed?

Area over 1,000 times the rate: fescue 5, rye 7, bluegrass 2.5 lb per 1,000. Here 25 lb.

How many bags?

Ceiling of seed over bag size. Here ceil(25/50) = 1 bag.

What does it cost?

Bags times price each. Here 1 x $80 = $80.00.

When should I overseed?

Early fall for cool-season grasses: warm soil with cool air and autumn rain.

What prep helps?

Yes. Mow low, dethatch, aerate, then seed into soil contact with light daily water.

Do bare spots need more?

Yes. Thin and bare spots take the NC State 6 lb fescue rate; established lawns take less.
