What it does

Oil changes run on two clocks. Miles wear the oil, months age it, and whichever hits first calls the shop.

The tool above adds the interval to the last change. Last at 42,000 mi with 5,000 ahead means next at 47,000, so 45,500 now leaves 1,500 mi or 1.5 months. The metric match is 75,600 km next with 2,400 km left.

Intervals follow the manual. Many modern cars run 5,000 to 10,000 mi on synthetic, while severe duty with dust, towing, or short trips shortens the span.

Monthly math assumes a thousand miles a month. Garage queens hit the time limit first, road warriors hit miles first, and both still change the filter.

Stickers close the loop. Write next miles and date on the shield so the next driver needs no memory.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial (mi) or metric (km).
  2. Enter last change miles.
  3. Enter now miles.
  4. Read next service first.
  5. Read miles left next.
  6. Read months and book the shop.

Formula

Next = last + interval (5000 mi or 8000 km). Left = next - now. Months = left / 1000 mi.

now

Intervals are 5,000 mi imperial and 8,000 km metric. Months divide by 1,000 mi or 1,600 km of average driving.

Worked example

Example: last 42,000, now 45,500 mi

Imperial defaults: last 42,000 mi, now 45,500 mi. These are also the default values, so the page opens on this answer.

  1. Last: 42,000 mi. Interval: 5,000 mi.
  2. Next: 42,000 + 5,000 = 47,000 mi.
  3. Now: 45,500 mi.
  4. Left: 47,000 - 45,500 = 1,500 mi.
  5. Months: 1,500 / 1,000 = 1.5 months.
  6. Tool shows 47,000 mi next, 1,500 mi left, 1.5 months left.

Limits

  • Mile math only. Manual grade and time limits rule.
  • Severe duty shortens intervals.
  • Odometer rollbacks break math.
  • Old leaks need shop eyes.

Common mistakes

  • Running miles past the sticker.
  • Ignoring the time limit on low miles.
  • Wrong grade to save a few dollars.
  • Skipping the filter change.
  • No record of the last change.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

Last 30,000, now 33,000 mi?

Next is 30,000 + 5,000 = 35,000 mi. Left is 35,000 - 33,000 = 2,000 mi. Months are 2.0.

Last 50,000, now 57,000 km metric?

Next is 50,000 + 8,000 = 58,000 km. Left is 58,000 - 57,000 = 1,000 km. Months are 1000 / 1600 = 0.6.

Questions

When is next service?

Add interval to last change. Here 42,000 + 5,000 = 47,000 mi.

Miles left?

Subtract now from next. Here 47,000 - 45,500 = 1,500 mi.

Months left?

Divide miles left by 1,000 per month. Here 1,500 / 1,000 = 1.5 months. Metric uses 1,600 km per month.

Which interval?

Follow the manual: many modern cars run 5,000 to 10,000 mi on synthetic. Severe duty shortens it.

Time as well as miles?

Yes. Time limits matter too: change at months even when miles run low.

Which oil grade?

No. Oil grade and filter specs need the manual.
