What it does

Hens share boxes instead of claiming one each. One box per four hens keeps laying calm without wasted wall space.

The tool above divides the flock by four. Twelve hens need 3 boxes with 6 cups of shavings and 3 dummy eggs. The metric match is 1500 ml of bedding.

Dummy eggs train pullets. Golf balls or wooden eggs in each box show new layers where the job happens.

Bedding stays shallow and clean. Two cups per box cushions without hiding eggs, with weekly top ups beating deep stale fills.

Dark corners win. Low quiet boxes away from roosts collect cleaner eggs than bright drafty perches.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial (cups) or metric (ml).
  2. Enter hen count.
  3. Read boxes first.
  4. Read bedding next.
  5. Read dummy eggs and set boxes low.

Formula

Boxes = ceil(hens / 4). Bedding = boxes x 2 cups. Dummy = boxes.

Metric bedding runs 500 ml per box. Dummy eggs match boxes one to one both ways.

Worked example

Example: 12 hens

Imperial defaults: 12 hens. These are also the default values, so the page opens on this answer.

  1. Hens: 12 layers.
  2. Rule: 1 box per 4 hens.
  3. Boxes: ceil(12 / 4) = 3 boxes.
  4. Bedding: 3 x 2 = 6 cups shavings.
  5. Dummy: 3 dummy eggs, one per box.
  6. Tool shows 3 boxes, 6 cups shavings, 3 dummy eggs.

Limits

  • Count math only. Broody hens hog boxes.
  • Bantams and giants need sized boxes.
  • Dirty eggs need cleaner boxes.
  • Predators need coop review.

Common mistakes

  • One box per hen wasting walls.
  • Bright boxes hens avoid.
  • Deep stale bedding.
  • No dummy eggs for pullets.
  • Roosts above boxes collecting droppings.

Try it yourself

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

6 hens?

ceil(6 / 4) = 2 boxes (1.5 rounds up). Bedding is 2 x 2 = 4 cups.

20 hens metric?

ceil(20 / 4) = 5 boxes. Bedding is 5 x 500 = 2500 ml.

Questions

Boxes for 12 hens?

Divide hens by 4 and round up. Here ceil(12 / 4) = 3 boxes.

Bedding?

Two cups of shavings per box. Here 3 x 2 = 6 cups.

Fake eggs?

One dummy egg per box trains pullets where to lay.

Box size?

Twelve inch cubes suit most layers. Bantams take smaller, giants larger.

Box placement?

Yes. Dark quiet corners beat bright busy walls.

Washing eggs?

No. Dirty eggs need cleaner boxes, not washers.
