What it does

Minutes of angle turn scope math into inches: one MOA is a slice of angle whose width grows with range. Multiply MOA by the per hundred rate and by hundreds of range for spread, then by four for quarter clicks. This page runs both unit sets.

The default is 2 MOA at 200 yd. Spread is 4.2 in with 8 clicks to come. Metric defaults convert the same shot to 183 m and give 10.6 cm, the same hole measured either way.

True versus shooter MOA trips cards. True uses 1.047 in per hundred while talk rounds to 1 in, a 5% gap that matters past mid range. This page uses true throughout, so label cards the same.

Clicks assume quarter MOA turrets. Eighth and half turrets, mil scopes, and ballistic drops need their own passes before dialing.

How to use

  1. Pick imperial or metric first.
  2. Enter the MOA value.
  3. Enter the range.
  4. Read spread first, then clicks.
  5. Dial clicks and confirm on paper.

Formula

Imperial: in = MOA x 1.047 x yd/100. Metric: cm = MOA x 2.908 x m/100. Clicks = MOA x 4.

1.047
True inches per MOA at 100 yd.

One true MOA spans 1.047 in at 100 yd (2.908 cm at 100 m); shooter MOA rounds to 1 in for talk. Clicks assume quarter MOA turrets. Distance converts at 0.9144 m per yard behind the scenes.

Worked example

Example: 2 MOA at 200 yd

2 MOA at 200 yd (metric 183 m).

  1. Spread: 2 x 1.047 x 200/100 = 4.2 in.
  2. Clicks: 2 x 4 = 8 clicks (1/4 MOA).
  3. Metric: 2 x 2.908 x 183/100 = 10.6 cm.
  4. Check: 10.6 cm is 4.2 in.
  5. Tool shows 4.2 in imperial and 10.6 cm metric.

Limits

  • Geometry only. Wind and ammo excluded.
  • Quarter turrets assumed.
  • True MOA, not rounded shooter MOA.
  • One distance per pass.

Common mistakes

  • Using 1 in instead of 1.047 past mid range.
  • Mixing yards with meters.
  • Dialing mil math on MOA turrets.
  • Reading spread as group size.
  • Forgetting to confirm zero.

Questions

Spread in inches?

MOA times 1.047 per hundred yards. Here 4.2 in.

Spread in cm?

MOA times 2.908 per hundred meters. Here 10.6 cm.

Scope clicks?

MOA times 4. Here 8 clicks.

True or shooter MOA?

True MOA is 1.047 in, shooter MOA rounds to 1 in. This page uses true.

Whole group size?

No. Wind, ammo, and shooter add their own spread.

Dope card use?

Yes for planning, but confirm zero at the rack distance.
