What it does

School lunch money leaks in small daily amounts that look harmless until the month closes. Five days at $3.75 is $18.75 a week and $75 over four weeks, which is why weekly and period totals beat mental math.

The tool above takes lunch days per week, weeks, and price per lunch. It returns weekly cost, lunch count, and period total, so add money days and packed days can be weighed side by side.

This math fits one flat lunch price. It does not fit tiered prices with milk or snacks added, free and reduced price eligibility, or months with holidays and field trips.

School meal programs frame the same unit: daily breakfast and lunch served to millions of children, with nutrition standards setting what counts as a meal. Family budgets then decide buy versus pack day by day.

Count buy days honestly. Three packed days cut a five day week to two paid lunches, which is the fastest savings lever here.

How to use

  1. Enter lunch days bought per week.
  2. Enter weeks in the period.
  3. Enter price per lunch with milk if bundled.
  4. Read weekly cost first for the allowance line.
  5. Read lunch count for the calendar check.
  6. Read period total for the deposit or budget.

Formula

Lunches = days x weeks. Weekly = days x price. Total = lunches x price.
days
Bought lunch days each week.
weeks
Weeks in the budget period.
price
Dollars per lunch as served.

Packed, absent, and holiday days stay out of the day count. Zero price gives zero totals with full lunch count. Snack and second entree extras need added lines.

Worked example

Example: 5 days, 4 weeks, $3.75 lunch

Days per week 5, weeks 4, price 3.75.

  1. Lunches: 5 x 4 = 20 lunches.
  2. Weekly: 5 x 3.75 = $18.75.
  3. Total: 20 x 3.75 = $75.00.
  4. Tool shows weekly $18.75, lunches 20 lunches, total $75.00.
  5. Packed check: 2 packed days cut weekly to 3 x 3.75 = $11.25.
