What it does

Homework research backs a simple ceiling: about 10 minutes per grade level each night, so fourth graders stop near 40 minutes while seniors stop near 2 hours. Past the guide, returns fade and sleep pays better.

The tool above takes grade with tonight minutes. It returns the nightly guide with the weekly total and a stop or go verdict.

The default grade 4 at 70 minutes runs 30 over: stop and contact the teacher. A first grader at 15 runs 5 over the 10 guide.

Rules follow NEA and PTA guidance reported through Duke research with policy center reviews behind them. All three agree on the 10-minute form used here.

How to use

  1. Enter the grade, K as 0.
  2. Enter tonight minutes so far.
  3. Read the nightly guide first.
  4. Read the weekly total beside it.
  5. Follow the verdict line.
  6. Loop the teacher in on overruns.

Formula

Nightly guide = grade x 10 min. Weekly = guide x 5. Over = actual - guide.
grade
Grade level, K as 0 through 12.
actual
Minutes actually spent tonight.
10 min
10 min per grade ceiling.

Kindergarten (grade 0) reads reading only with no minute guide. Weekly assumes 5 school nights. IEP, language, AP load, and absence weeks adjust the guide with the teacher.

Worked example

Example: grade 4, long night

Defaults: grade 4, 70 minutes tonight.

  1. Grade: 4.
  2. Guide: 4 x 10 = 40 min/night.
  3. Weekly: 40 x 5 = 200 min = 3 hr 20 min.
  4. Actual tonight: 70 min.
  5. Over: 70 - 40 = 30 min.
  6. Verdict: stop, contact the teacher.
  7. Tool shows 40 min/night, 3 hr 20 min/week, 30 min over.

Questions

What is the 10-minute rule?

Ten minutes per grade level per night: grade 1 gets 10, grade 4 gets 40, seniors about 2 hours.

Who sets the rule?

NEA and PTA guidance reported through Duke research and policy centers.

What if homework runs long?

Stop at the guide even unfinished, then contact the teacher. Extra minutes show diminishing returns.

How much for kindergarten?

No routine homework in kindergarten: reading only, if the teacher asks.

What about older students?

Roughly 90 min in junior high and 90 min to 2.5 hr in high school before returns fade.

Do weekends add more?

No. Weekend projects should fit inside the weekly total, not stack on top.
