What it does

Hamster wheels fail small and cages fail smaller. Dwarfs need 20 cm wheels with 100x50 cm floors while Syrians need 30 cm wheels over the same 5,000 sq cm; an 11-inch wheel misses both Syrian marks while a 90x40 cage misses the floor by 1,400. Backs and feet pay for both errors.

The tool above checks wheels and cages against PDSA minimums. Enter species, wheel inches, and cage centimeters, and it prints PASS/FAIL per part with an overall verdict. Defaults pass a dwarf setup; the Syrian practice case fails both.

Welfare sources set each line. PDSA requires 100x50 cm floors with 20 cm dwarf and 30 cm Syrian solid wheels, RSPCA Worcester asks 26 cm dwarfs with 28 cm Syrians, and archived RSPCA floors ran 80x50. The stricter PDSA marks rule here with RSPCA noted.

Surface and bedding finish welfare beyond size. Solid wheels and floors protect feet, deep diggable bedding fills burrowing needs, and single-level space beats stacked tubes. Upgrade failures before housing, not after limping starts.

How to use

  1. Pick dwarf or Syrian.
  2. Enter the wheel inches.
  3. Enter cage length and width in cm.
  4. Read wheel PASS/FAIL first.
  5. Read cage PASS/FAIL.
  6. Upgrade every FAIL before housing.

Formula

Wheel cm = in x 2.54 vs 20 dwarf / 30 Syrian. Cage = L x W vs 5,000 sq cm.
species
Dwarf or Syrian species selector.
wheel
Wheel diameter in inches.
cage
Cage length and width in cm.

PDSA wheel and cage minimums with RSPCA Worcester wheel marks and the archived 80x50 floor noted.

Worked example

Example: dwarf setup

Defaults: dwarf, 8 in wheel, 100x50 cm cage.

  1. Inputs: dwarf hamster, 8 in wheel, 100x50 cm cage.
  2. Wheel: 8 x 2.54 = 20.3 cm vs 20 min: PASS.
  3. Cage: 100 x 50 = 5,000 sq cm vs 5,000: PASS.
  4. Verdict PASS both. Solid surface, back straight.
  5. Tool shows PASS 8 in, PASS 5,000 sq cm.

Limits

  • Size checks only. Bedding and care separate.
  • Minimums, not ideals; bigger better.
  • Species pair only; Chinese follow Syrian.
  • Vet guidance rules injuries.

Common mistakes

  • Small wheels bending backs.
  • Cages under 5,000 sq cm.
  • Wire mesh wheels and floors.
  • Stacking tubes instead of floor.
  • Housing before upgrading fails.

Quick checks. Answers sit tucked under each question.

Syrian, 8 in wheel, 90x40 cage?

Wheel 20.3 cm vs 30: FAIL. Cage 90x40 = 3,600 vs 5,000: FAIL. Verdict upgrade both.

Syrian, 12 in wheel, 100x50?

Wheel 12 in = 30.5 cm vs 30: PASS. Cage 5,000: PASS. Verdict PASS both.

Questions

What wheel size per species?

Dwarfs 20 cm (8 in); Syrians 30 cm (12 in). Solid surface with straight backs.

How big a cage?

100x50 cm (5,000 sq cm, 775 sq in) minimum unbroken floor per PDSA.

Is 11 in enough for Syrians?

Yes. An 11 in wheel (27.9 cm) misses both 28 and 30 cm marks; buy 12 in.

Do sources disagree?

Yes. RSPCA Worcester asks dwarfs 26 cm and Syrians 28 cm; PDSA asks 20 and 30.

Is there an older smaller minimum?

Yes. Older RSPCA floor runs 80x50 (4,000 sq cm, 620 sq in); PDSA 100x50 rules here.

Does surface matter?

Yes. Wire mesh injures feet; solid wheels and floors only.
